I recently acquired a "Mitchell Mark III."
There is very little information available about this camera.
It is currently being restored.
With the help of Mr. Bennett from cinemagear.com I was able to determine what type of belt was used.
If anyone knows anything about this camera please let me know.

	Hi All,

I have a Mitchell R35 Mkii in fairly good condition barring a motor problem. I am trying to assemble the various pieces I need to get it running again and am stumbling at the lens mount. It has the original R35 mount on the hard front. I want to convert it to work with EF or M42 as that's most of my lenses.

Does anyone have any experience or knowledge on whether it's possible?

I found online someone quoting the 73' AC manual saying the S35R's mount was 2.25inches so 56.25mm - EF is 44mm so I'd assume it's possible, subject to any obstruction in the camera body?

If so, does anyone know anyone in the UK or otherwise that does this?

	Cheers, Nick

Looking to get my hands on a mitchell mkii S35 manual.

We acquired one but it's in need of restoration and having a manual may help as we can't even open to side!

I see that there are not any recent posts about these iconic cameras. I am a restorer/collector with a few of these cameras looking to gain more knowledge of them.

Currently I have a set of videos in progress about some of my cameras posted on mitchellCamera.com in the "members articles" section. As a result of a research project, I have also published a series of Mitchell production charts on that site that give serial numbers of Standards, BNC' s and NC' s by year ends that may be of interest to some of you here.
Hello Gents,

It's a mutant Mitchell. Please look over the pictures and let me know what you think it is. Here's what I can tell about it. It's serial is actually NC 390. It's mag mount is wider than the standard Mitchell mag. I don't know what lens mount it is. It locks down on the lens' flange. It is a pellicle reflex. It has "Mark Armistead" engraved on the aluminum lens opening cap. It has a plate on the side of the viewer that says, "CC Camera Equipment Incorporated, 315 W 43rd St. New York, NY. Model # NCX, Serial # 390". It was the motor that was serial # 54 NC 754. It's a whopping 115V synchro motor.

What do you know about it?

Thanks, Paul

Hi you all :)

I'm trying to figure out the exact timing of the mirror vs. the registration pins in camera using Mitchell type of movement and 170° shutter angle.

My camera is a Russian made Soyuz US3N so it is not a exact copy but close enough to some mitchells.

Generally, when are the reg pins supposed to engage in Mitchell movement and when they should retract compared to the mirror edge?

I have to be able to time this myself every now and then because of lubricating etc. so can't ship it to a camera tech. The movement should be in factory specs so no need to adjust it, so...

Are the pins supposed to engage just a tiny bit before the shutter opens so that the pins retract a moment before the shutter closes for film transport and the claws start to transport film a tiny bit before the shutter is fully closed, or...

...are they supposed to engage at the exact moment the shutter opens so that the shutter can fully close before film transport begins but the tiny moment the shutter opens may have some instability when the pins are centering the film, or...

...is the timing in the video about right? to me it looks like it is just a tiny bit off and the pins should engage just a tiny bit quicker after the shutter has passed to ensure the stability of the start of the exposure. but am I then risking instability at the end of the exposure?

This is pretty difficult trial and error to time because of the wormgear like gears used in the camera but I can live with a little off timing

I also asked this at Motion Picture Technology group on Facebook, let's see what they think...

Now we all love these cameras, the problem I find sometimes is finding test footage of these gems.

example. Right now I'm looking to see what the fries mitchell 35R3 looks like in motion.

I'm sure there are plenty of films out there shot on the formats but it'd be great to make a database of examples, listing films shot with such camera_ such lenses_ and maybe even include clips.

but in any case, anyone have any Fries Mitchell 35r3 footage that they've shot or have seen online anywhere? I'm trying to get an idea of how well the camera runs before I start walking in the domain of considering the purchase of one.

Thanks!

Hello !

Which lenses were usually used with Mitchell Cameras in the 60s, 70s an 80s ?

I think the prime lenses were most Super Baltars, the zoom lenses first som Berthiot Pan Cinor

and later Cooke.

Does anybody know details ?

Let us say for the moment, that the world was perfect and presents rained down from the heavens.

Let us also say that you have $3000 to spend on a 35mm camera.

Which would you pick: Mitchell or Konvas. The reason I didn't include Arri, is that like all things German, if it says Porsche on the front, it usually has Porsche price on the back; even if it's junk.

I have been saving, and I would say in the next month or two, I would like to buy a complete package. I have been leaning towards 16mm, but I really would like to shoot on 35. In my wildest dreams, I think 2-perf techniscope would be what I would want... Well, in my wildest dreams I would shoot everything in 65mm.

The Russian stuff seems to be flooding the market. Prices are relatively low. Mitchell gear, on the other hand, is scarce.

Woops, forgot to add one thing: Sync-Sound is a must. I can stand an MOS camera, as long as I can attach some add on device for syncing.

Thoughts? Opinions? Those who have owned any of these great machines, I would love to hear from you.

So I want to shoot some 35.

I have my own bolex 16mm and arri S which I have shot with a ton, so I feel this step shouldn't be too difficult. I just moved to LA and now I can rent some cameras. I was looking online and for under $150 a day I can rent a fully set-up Mitchell NC or a Motor Driven Eyemo with Mags.

Which one should i rent? Most likely for a no budget music video. Hope to shoot 800 feet or so. That would make around 9 minutes of footage for a 3 minute song.

I feel the eyemo would be easier to load and have newer nikon lenses.

I'm worried about the complex Mitchell loading and that the lenses are probably old as dirt.

Mainly this would be a reel builder and a chance for me and some other film geeks to try 35.

I only found rates this cheap with Alan Gordon, anyone have any other rental houses in LA with comparable rates?

Also I'm wondering if there is any way to get around insurance? Like putting down a $1000 deposit or something. I'm just a young 20's film geek that wants to try 35, I'm not strapping a $10,000 35mm Arri to the hood of my car and jumping it.

Thanks!

Hal, John or any takers,

I've ordered a dirt cheap 24Vin&out PWM with potentiometer control off of sleazebay. I've got a 24V (27.5V actual) power supply. I've also got a variable voltage power supply. Do you think this PWM will handle the 27.5V or will I have to use the variable at 24V? I'm trying to control the speed on this gigantor 24V DC motor for my Mitchell NC scan head at 23.976 fps.

Are there any tips or warnings you could throw me since this is the first time I have wandered out of the old fashioned rheostat zone and into the PWM zone?

I just watched the DVD about Stanley Kubrick and his career (sorry, I returned it to

the video store and can't think of the proper title.)

There's a story in there about how Stanley Kubrick obtained a Zeiss lens that

had been developed for NASA and could shoot at F.07 and he wanted to use it on

his Mitchell BNC (for Barry Lyndon I think.) The guy who modified the camera said

that it would be a challenge, although he was able to do it, because the camera has

two shutters and a thick aperture plate.

Why would it have two shutters? Are there other cameras that do also?

This feature I am planning to feature with 16mm and it has to do with the alternate past. I want it to seem like a documentory/TV news type of feature that has to do with a fictional war, so I decided to use newsreel cameras like the Mitchell 16mm. But questions come up when I see this camera...

Is this camera worth getting? If so, where can you locate them? I have been trying to find them but the only one I can find is a prop verson for theaterical, commerical, etc. uses. If not, then what other 16mm newsreel cameras are there to buy/rent that are worth getting?
