From today's press release:

http://www.dalsa.com/news/news.asp?itemID=359

As previously announced, DALSA is committed to eliminating the ongoing losses in the Digital Cinema division by the end of 2008. The Company has recently entered into a non-binding letter of intent (?LOI?), which includes a 30-day period of exclusive negotiations, with Arnold & Richter Cine Technik GmbH (?ARRI?), one of the world?s leading manufacturers of cinematography cameras. Under the terms of the LOI, ARRI would acquire certain existing assets of the DALSA Digital Cinema division. Concurrently, DALSA and ARRI would enter into a technology partnership agreement whereby DALSA will develop for ARRI custom high performance CCD image sensors and related products. Furthermore, DALSA would supply the developed products to ARRI for digital cinematography applications through DALSA?s core businesses. Related to the transaction contemplated by the LOI, DALSA will endeavour to find a buyer for its Los Angeles based camera rental operations.

DALSA will eliminate the ongoing losses from the Digital Cinema business prior to year end; however, there is no assurance that any transactions will be completed.

The results of operations and financial position of DALSA?s Digital Cinema business unit have been segregated and presented separately as discontinued operations in the Company?s unaudited consolidated interim financial statements for the third quarter. The Company has taken a $24.9 million after tax charge comprised of a non-cash charge of $21.7 million and a cash charge of $3.2 million. For further information, refer to note 11 of the accompanying notes to the Company?s unaudited consolidated interim financial statements for Q3 2008.

?The actions we undertook in the third quarter to stem further losses in our Digital Cinema initiative will now allow us to focus our attention more fully on our core Digital Imaging and Semiconductor businesses, and to further build on their success moving forward,? commented Brian Doody, Chief Executive Officer of DALSA Corporation. ?The financial results in our core businesses this quarter and this year underscore DALSA?s strong international technology and product leadership position as well as the strong fundamentals of our business. We look forward to meeting with investors and analysts to share more about our Digital Imaging and Semiconductor businesses at our upcoming Analyst Day taking place in Toronto on November 18th, 2008.? For more information on the Investor Day please refer to the information contained at the bottom of this press release.

Dear valued forum members,

Let me begin by introducing myself;

My name is Syrous Nabatian and here at DALSA I hold the title of " Manager of Production Operations/Camera Department", I know, it's a mouthful, lol.

Now that the UN-pleasantries are out of the way lets start with answers to some of the questions you had:

The good news is we do have production grade Evolution cameras in house, the bad news is they are booked and some are on projects as we speak.

Not to worry my fellow film makers and camera enthusiasts, I do have a couple of Beta units available in house for you to play with.

Also on the news front, in addition to Codex recording units we now offer S2 recorders; which is a flexible as well as compact option!

We also conduct classes and training twice a month, for those that are interested please go to our website and register; you might even win a prize ;) .

Since this is my first post on this forum I'm going to extend my personal "special offer" to the first five email responses to the post!

Now the offer;

If you qualify you get to shoot your own 5 minute short with the Evolution camera (based upon camera availability). That means we will walk you trough the DE-bayering process, show you how to render your material and show you a cost effective solution to capture and use 4k Raw.

You will meet DALSA digital Executive team over lunch and have a couple of laughs in the process.

You will receive some goodies at the end of the day from our Marketing Department.

You will also meet the Dalsa Technical staff in case you work on a project with the Evolution in the future, and we will run you through the "do's and don'ts" on the camera.

For more details on the offer you can contact me via my email or simply pick up the phone and call me!

I also would like to know what you think about posts like this?

Do you find it useful?

Let me know...

My contact info is below, and yes please send email to my linked mail in this forum if possible. My corporate email has a tendency of blocking emails :( I want to make sure I pay close and personal attention to each and everyone's inquiry.

LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA, May 05, 2008 (MARKET WIRE via COMTEX News Network) ----DALSA Corporation (TSX: DSA) -

"Reach for Me," the first feature-length motion picture to be shot and produced entirely in 4K, will be screened tonight on Sony's 4K Digital Cinema Projection Systems. Directed by Levar Burton and produced by AMediaVision Productions, the movie was captured using DALSA's Origin 4K cinematography camera, with 4K image processing and digital intermediate (DI) managed by Post Logic.

The screening will be held at Landmark Theatre's flagship theatre, The Landmark, in Los Angeles' Westside Pavilion. "Reach for Me" is a heartwarming story about life's challenges and how love, compassion and humor can bridge the difficult passages facing two friends who are generations apart.

"This screening is a perfect example of the practical reality that 4K technology has become," said Andrew Stucker, director industry relations for Sony Electronics' digital cinema division. "From end to end, movie-goers will be able to immerse themselves in the incredible experience that 4K resolution can provide."

The picture's producer, Mark Wolfe commented that "having a complete end to end 4K workflow gave us all the creative and time advantages of digital moviemaking all the while maintaining the beautifully rich look of traditional film production, without adding any additional cost to the production process."

Sony's SRX-R220 digital cinema projection system, capable of outputting 18,000 lumens and 8 million pixels or resolution, will be used for the screening.

According to Rob Hummel, President of DALSA Digital Cinema, the production of "Reach for Me," clearly demonstrates that 4K technology is the future of digital cinema. "4K projection technology empowers the digital cinema pipeline to display images equal to the most pristine film answer print," he said, "so whether the image is a 4K scanned 35mm film, or photographed with a DALSA camera, 4K projection ensures the audience will see an image without compromise, and that every seat in the house gets a spectacular picture."

DALSA's Origin 4K cinematography camera with a CODEX digital disk recorder was used during production and all data was archived to LTO 3 tape. Post Logic used a Baselight 8 system during the digital intermediate process.

"Having assembled a top talent and engineering team, Post Logic is well equipped to handle the increased bandwidth and file processing demands of a 4K DI," said Larry Birstock at Post Logic. "A true end-to-end 4K workflow is now a viable alternative for movie makers."

"Reach for Me" is produced by Charlene Blaine-Schulenburg, Susan R. Rodgers and Mark Wolfe. The movie stars Oscar nominees Seymour Cassel and Alfre Woodard, as well as Johnny Whitworth (3:10 to Yuma), Lacey Chabert (Mean Girls, Party of Five) and Adrienne Barbeau (The Fog, Escape from New York). The worldwide rights for "Reach for Me" are currently available.

Hello all,

If you are making the trip to NAB 2008 and looking for the DALSA booth, you won't find it. Like Apple and Avid we won't be exhibiting. However, you can still find DALSA equipment and/or images in several places on the show floor.

Most notably you'll find a fully functional Origin II as well as a mock-up display of the forthcoming Evolution camera in the S.Two booth (SL9208). Prototypes of Evolution are due to arrive next month in Los Angeles.

Visiting the S.Two booth you'll get to see several cool things, including an image captured with the Origin II/S.Two DFR4K and recorded out to IMAX (15-perf 65mm)!! It truly stunning. You'll also get to see the new color combination of the Evolution camera (much improved in my opinion), and of course all the cool new tools from S.Two.

I don't know all the places that our images can be seen (there are many), but in addition to S.Two they will definitely be at Iridas, Cineform, DVS, Sony's 4K theater, and during a panel discussion at the Digital Cinema Summit.

I have a limited amount of time during NAB for meetings. However, if you would like to meet me at the show please contact the LA office.

The Dalsa company, though relatively new to the camera business, is a major maker of imaging chips. A lot of satellite images come from Dalsa chips.

The Origin camera chip is a single Bayer masked CCD, 4046 photosites wide by 2048 photosites high. The physical size of the image area is 34.0 mm x 17.2 mm (1.339" x 0.677"). The photosites are square, on 8.4 micron centers, separated by 1.6 micron borders. The raw Bayer data has a depth of 16 bits per sample.

The camera has an optical viewfinder fed by a rotating mirror shutter.

OK, there's a start. Can others fill in the rest, processing, compression, etc?

Would it be a good idea to do this kind of overview summary for the rest of the HD camera subforums?

Copypasting from a DALSA newsletter:

"Tempting Hyenas," the first feature length film shot with the DALSA Origin 4K digital cinema camera, will undergo a full 4K DI at Post Logic Studios, a leading independent post-production and digital intermediate (DI) service facility.

...

Post Logic?s 4K workflow, developed in cooperation with DALSA Digital Cinema, begins with the careful handling of assets at the end of each day of shooting. Data from the Origin 4K camera?up to two terabytes a day?was recorded onto a Codex unit and output as 2K ProRes files for viewing dailies and for creating an edit decision list (EDL) during online editing.

The files were offloaded daily from the Codex onto a Ciprico Media Vault for transporting back to Post Logic Studios in Hollywood. Upon arrival, the data was backed up onto 400GB LTO3 tapes, with all assets and metadata meticulously catalogued in a proprietary database. This process ensured that the production could shoot continuously without skipping a beat. With the LTO3 tapes serving as the 4K image master files, Post Logic Studios will match up the time codes with the EDL to create the final 4K product.

?With the new digital cameras, post production houses are becoming involved in every stage of production. We?re there during pre-production, during production and afterward in post,? said Dr. Mitch Bogdanowicz, Executive VP of Imaging Science, Post Logic Studios. ?Early on, we made very specific suggestions about working with the DALSA camera. The quality output of any digital camera you shoot with requires not only an understanding of what you?re capturing, but also the limitations of the curves you?re placing images on, so that when you get to the final product you can really optimize things.?
