Hello, I would like to confirm the classification of lens types for Super 35mm and Full Frame sensors based on focal lengths.

I've come across a lot of conflicting information online regarding lens classifications, which has left me a bit confused. Could someone please confirm if these classifications are accurate or if there are any variations that I should be aware of?

Thanks in advance!

For Super 35mm sensor:

  • Ultra wide angle: below 12mm

  • Wide angle: 12mm to 16mm

  • Standard wide angle: 16mm to 24mm

  • Normal: 24mm to 35mm

  • Telephoto: 50mm and above

For Full Frame sensor:

  • Ultra wide: below 16mm

  • Wide angle: 16mm to 24mm

  • Standard wide-angle: 24mm to 35mm

  • Normal: 35mm to 50mm

  • Telephoto: 65mm and above

I do not think there is an exact classification specified in an official ISO document. Mine for full frame is: normal = 35 to 85mm, below = wide, above = tele. You will find some variation across people. All the more that there is the FF/S35 ratio that some people take into account, while some others do not and simply keep the same focal lengths in mind.

I typed up a bunch of stuff, then actually read the Wikipedia article:  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Normal_lens

It gives a pretty good explanation of what would be considered a "normal' lens, so read that first.

When i was photographing with a 4x5" camera, getting that normal perspective was a challenge sometimes, but the rules of thumb (FL equal to diagonal for normal, long equal to twice shorter side, WA equal to short side) still are useful.

Go find the specs on your film gate or sensor, and proceed from there. You won't go wildly wrong.
