Joey Ruffini Posted June 17, 2025 Posted June 17, 2025 I am trying to make a list of all the vendors that still work on motion picture equipment. I have a 16bleq that is running at 39fps and it got me digging through many many old pages here. So this is what I have so far DuAll camera will work mechanically on anything pretty much but won’t touch electrical issues AZ spectrum will do electrical on arriflex cameras and install video taps crystal control etc. all bespoke. And not terribly priced but they have a 6 month backlog Cinematechnic no longer specifically works on cameras but they have archived all their resources for reference and have a ton of hard to find information Visual Products appears to be limited to sales, but they do remanufacture some hard to find rigging components for 16sr and the like Please add to the list and I will compile it all into a master 1
Premium Member Aapo Lettinen Posted June 17, 2025 Premium Member Posted June 17, 2025 (edited) I make custom crystal sync motors, control boards and software and can often troubleshoot and repair old motor electronics too if it is some simpler issue. Complex issues I often solve by designing and changing completely new control circuit boards which can have more and better features than the original electronics had. Located in Finland though so shipping is more costly. Advantage is that I can still make small production run custom stuff out of scratch (other techs sell existing old crystal sync designs so usually don't want to make new models with different boards and features or for different camera) . I can be subhired too if someone is for example just needing circuit board designed and assembled and handling the mechanical work by themself Edited June 17, 2025 by Aapo Lettinen
Steve Switaj Posted June 19, 2025 Posted June 19, 2025 I can recommend Ken Stone at Stone Cinema Engineering up in Antelope Valley. I've recently done a few projects with him and he's still in the game. He mostly does 35 and 65, with an emphasis on the specialty cameras, but he goes deep into the engineering side if you need a weird modification or find yourself with a one-off that needs some love. http://stonecinema.com/ Also Richard Bennett at Cinemagear. I seem to recall that he had some kind of senior position at Mitchell before they closed, and then he opened his own shop. He has a little place in El Segundo where he services cameras and runs a retail shop for older and collectible machines. In case you need someone to make a part for your 1920 Prestwich, he is definitely your guy. https://cinemagear.com/ Also, he posts an interesting blog on his website, updated it roughly weekly, about whatever he's working on at the moment. https://cinemagear.com/blog/
