Arri Fiberscreen modification, how is it done?

Hello all,

I'm quite interested how the arri fiberscreens (Particularly the 16mm ones) are modified by companies like shurco. 
Theres very little info i could find online. My hypthesis is that onto a blank they deposit some kind of metal, maybe by vapor deposition? 
following that either a mask would be applied and the metal etched, or it would be removed by a laser, to reveal the markings. 

I have access to a spare N16 SR Fiberscreen and a friend at a local university that could in theory do this with me together in his spare time.
Does anyone have any knowledge they'd like to share? if my own experiments turn something up ill document it here!
