Premium Member Simon Wyss Posted November 25 Premium Member Posted November 25 It’s not fiberglass. We don’t want glass fibres near film. That is a synthetic resin composite, also called hard paper. Please get informed before putting out stuff like that.

I think they normally used some kind of cotton cloth as fibre for making that kind of sheets. PCBs were made out of similar kind of stuff though a bit different fibres diameter and pattern. They still make the cheapest PCBs from bakelite sheet, some times called "pertinax" or other names. It is fragile but can be much flatter surface than fiberglass pcbs commonly have and thus it is common on children's toys and other devices where one glues the IC chips directly to the pcb surface then adding the "black dot" sealant over for protection. Another benefit of phenolic resin bakelite pcb is that it can be drilled and shaped very easily like any hard plastic whereas epoxy-fiberglass base like the FR4 etc is very abrasive and wears out the carbide drills and mills very quickly. Nowadays the easiest economic way to make custom spool flanges would be to design a aluminium PCB which has black solder mask and cut to the daylight spool flange dimensions. Then making the center with some other means like 3d printing or cnc machining. The flanges would likely cost something like 1usd to 2usd a piece and the center part couple of bucks to 15 bucks depending on the manufacturing method and complexity
