Nathaniel Elder Posted January 31 Posted January 31 Hello, I got a Bolex REX 5 recently converted by Abdul in Queens (cinerepair@aol.com) and every roll I've shot on it so far (4 rolls) has had this issue on the very right side of the frame. In some takes it comes out like a straight line just off of the right edge of the frame, and in other takes (the very light leaked orange mountain shot) you can see that there is some very clear straight edge that is dividing two sides of something. (Example images linked below) My lab tech thinks it is possibly something with the "gate design." I have not been able to figure out what this is, and was wondering if anyone could shed light on it. I'm in communication with Abdul, but in the meantime I know a lot of people on this forum know about this kind of thing. What is happening here? What should I do to fix it? For context, I used fresh Kodak stock every time. The lenses used were the: 10mm/1.6 Kern Switar AR (I know they are not for the REX cameras but I don't see how that would be causing this issue—please correct me if I'm wrong) 80mm Soviet lens (super light leaked shot of orange mountains) 25mm/1.4 Kern Switar AR EXAMPLE IMAGES LINKED HERE
Premium Member Dom Jaeger Posted January 31 Premium Member Posted January 31 Could just be the edge where the frame was expanded to S16 reflecting or shadowing. Ideally the back surface of the gate has a cutout machined around the expanded part to make the wall equally thin all around. Otherwise the S16 side can be much thicker.
