I'm wondering what's being used for filters and matte boxes on these tiny lenses.  I assume hanging regular filters and matte boxes on them is a bad idea.....

Wouldn't you usually expect to have the matte box on rods, rather than attached to the lens itself? That avoids the problem of a rotating barrel as well.

Why don’t you get yourself a matte box that connects to the lens’ filter mount? In many cases, their connection to the lens is rotatable (not sure if this is also true for the two models linked below):

(There are also options where you can stack up to four or six square filters, e.g. filters from cokin or Tiffen, or options with three or four flags.)

You might also try a smaller matte box as e.g. one designed for S8?

The main difference between the S8K and the above two products is that the S8K connects to the filter thread and to the camera‘s tripod socket, cold shoe, … to avoid problems when the lens rotates.

(Earlier versions have been called K8 instead of S8K. Ewa Marine later sold them under a different name with different holders for video cameras (mainly VHS-C and Hi8), hence they have been still sold in the late 1990s. They also produced a similar model called „Ewa K35“ for still cameras up to 135 film.)
