Videography starts off with the best of intentions. New camera. All the kit. Great!

But over time, it tends to devolve into drone shots. Anyone else noticed that? Or surf shots.

The best drone shot I've seen is from a short film someone did a few years ago. It wasn't very high and was basically an overhead tracking shot, looking straight down. It was just one shot and it made sense. Maybe someone will make a film with no cuts, shot entirely on an aerial drone, moving from one character to another. Could work!

We will get tired of them and long for the waving grass and flying litter from a helicopter's downwash.

And Kubrick's rotor blades in the full frame.

That sounds like a great use for a drone.

One of the best helicopter shots in feature films I've seen was in Australia's 'We of the Never Never' in the 80s. It was the opening shot and set the scene beautifully. In the theatre, on the big screen, it was truly impressive. These days would be done with a drone. For very rare shots, making sure it's not overdone, it's a great effect.

Some more great 'drone' shots of the past: at the end of 'Chitty Chitty Bang Bang' when Potts and 'Truly Scrumptious' are flying over the farm, looking down. The snow speeder out of the window shots in 'The Empire Strikes Back.' And the best of all: opening of 'The Sound of Music.'
