Hello all,

I just got an sr3 advanced that’s been giving me quite the headache. After fixing gate centering at Italian tech I tested the camera and seem to have a ghosting effect on my footage.

Anyone seen this before? Is it shutter sync? (It’s very small but noticeable on the image )

lenses used:

12-120 Zeiss optex (colimate on camera )

6mm and 9.5mm ultra prime ( thought they were colimate so we didn’t check colimator seems like they are off. So don’t pay attention to the wider shots.

Ghosting is apparent on fire tool signal of zoom shot inside and outside o the zoom shot when I come behind a truck ( the metal tubes seem duplicate)

any help or leads appreciated!

I don’t recognise any ghosting. What you may be meaning are simply blurred images due to the camera being shaken.

We need to investigate

  • film stock, which type,
  • relative air humidity and temperature at the time of shooting,
  • was the stock frozen?

A wave of film transport problems is rolling over us involving less-than-earlier hardened overcoat gelatine, perforation off the standard, film strips cut too wide or too narrow, cellulose triacetate base webs of lesser quality.

I presume a Kodak Vision 3 colour negative film, right?

Vision 3 500t 5219 stock was about 2 years old I think.

Humidity inside id say was about 60 since it was controlled. Outside Rome now is about 56

temperature around 18 inside and out.

i think stock wasn’t frozen , if anything kept in fridge , but it’s been out of fridge for a good year I think.

Good, that takes us back to film transport. Since the Arriflex 16 SR 3 Advanced has a moving register pin that fits the perforation holes vertically something like what you’re showing should be impossible. So logics say that the registration is not happening. This would take place with a worn or damaged joint to or the register pin itself. Things happen, perhaps an accident had once happened during a high-speed job.

Hard to tell from that footage what’s going on, could just be motion blur combined with bad focus.

As always with these sorts of issues, an experienced technician should be able to check things like the cameras mechanical condition, the shutter timing, the flange depth and ground glass focus. Also get the lenses collimated or use a good rental house. A well exposed, well focussed, hard-mounted chart test will give you more clarity.
