Gautam Valluri Posted May 26 Posted May 26 As usual Indiewire has done the roundup of this year's films at Cannes and the cameras and lenses they used: https://www.indiewire.com/gallery/cannes-2026-cameras-lenses-arri-alexa-35/ Happy to see the Digital Bolex being used in a feature! Also, the DP of James Gray's Paper Tiger, Joaquin Baca-Asay mentions using the 5203 (50D) rated at 100 ASA and the 5219 (500T) rated at 1000 ASA. These would've been push-processed right?

Yea, tho I would not push 50D, it does not respond as well. 250D and 500T push very well, 2 stops on both and you'll for sure retain a considerable amount of detail in the blacks. With 50D and 200T, the push doesn't really do much but add grain in the blacks. It does kinda prove the stocks are very different in their design.

It was only on the market for a few years but now ten years after it was stopped being produced, it still is being used out there on movies. It was built like a tank so probably all of them made are still functional. The connectors and file format were industry standard so you can connect any thing to it and use the footage in any software somehow. For this project they say they wanted to shoot 16mm film but for budget and take length reasons chose the Digital Bolex. It's hard to find stills from it online but the few I've seen are very nice looking.

Some rental houses rent them out. They still come up at used camera sites and eBay now and then. Sometimes for way too much money and sometimes only a bit more than when they were new. Twice now I've seen them for sale for about CAN$1200 but those of course sold quickly.
