Hello,

I will be the DP on a student super 16 film coming up this June. Here's the deal. Part of the film will be in the present day and part in the past. The past will be bright and contrasty and the present will be more gloomy and gray. The thing is that we're shooting in June. If the sun is out in full I have to think of some ideas to create that gloomy atmosphere. Was wondering about fog or haze filters. I guess I always assumed that they wouldn't really do it for me, but better to ask some folks who might have used them before. Thanks for any info.

In sunshine, fog filters will increase halation, giving you a glowy look to the highlights, which is not really gloomy.

You need to try to stage in the shade or under silks if the sun is out, maybe bias the image towards the cold side.
