How do I know which aspect ratio to use?

How does one know when it is a good idea to use the 'standard' frame format (1.85:1) and when to use a 'widescreen' frame format (2.39:1)?

I think it comes from the story and what the story calls for.

If you don't have a strong feeling for any aspect ratio, then stick to 1.85, which is the most "classical" -- composing well for 2.39 requires a certain passion for the unique aspects of that super widescreen aspect ratio. If you don't have a personal opinion about it, there is no real reason to use it.

 

By the way, both 1.85 and 2.39 are considered "widescreen" formats -- i.e. both are wider than 1.37 Academy and both emerged during the "Widescreen Revolution" of the 1950's.

Just to let you know, I already knew they were both widescreen formats. I was just trying to describe the two in the best way that I could.
