Another famous collaboration: Powell-Pressburger and Jack Cardiff (I think they did three movies together, all great: "Matter of Life & Death", "Black Narcissus", "Red Shoes").

Cardiff's first work with Powell was on "Colonel Blimp" but on the second unit though

Wanted to second, or third, Godard and Coutard. Almost ten consecutive, groundbreaking, years of work from these two.

Someone mentioned Tarkovsky and Nyqvist. An excellent combination, although they worked together only once. Tarkovsky worked with only one cinematographer more than twice, and that was with Vadim Yusov, on one student film and then Tarkovsky's first three features. Another superb combination...

Wim Wenders and Robby Müller

Jim Jarmusch and Robby Müller

David Cronenburg and Peter Suschitzky (Son of Wolfgang Suschitzky, also a great Cinematographer: the original "Get Carter")

Coen Brothers and Roger Deakins (Most likely the ultimate collaboration between Director and Cinematographer)

An d I think the most important of this collaborations it's Welles-Toland, because we can say, that it was the first time in the history of cinema, that a director and a cinematographer share their knowledge, and put it in to the dramatic universe of the film.
