Resources

Recommended Posts

Hi there,

I am looking to learn, at a more in-depth level, about film, it's properties etc., as well as the processing and printing.

If anyone has any advice as to what resources there are out there, both on-line and in print, that would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers,

Ash.

Hello, Ashley

Grab a lab: start by scratching some sgraffito into a 35-mm color photo film (5 feet long), take that to a lab (where do you live btw), and ask the manager to print it. There is no better way to find out about people and film.

Like Silvester Stallone alias Terminator says: Trhrhusst me, Baby.

Hello,

I work in a motion picture lab and this manual of Kodak helped me very much.

The essential guide for filmmakers.

if you want to learn more about processing and printing check kodak H-24 manuals:

regards

Michelle

The Kodak books that Michelle recommends are excellent.

For a more practically oriented look at film, processing and printing, my own book Film Technology in Post Production (Focal Press, 2nd edition) should give you a lot of information. It's available from Focal (Elsevier) as a hard copy or as a downloadable e-book.

From a cameraperson's perspective, get Paul Wheeler's Practical Cinematography. It's in its 2nd edition, but I suspect if you can find a first edition it might be a little more oriented towards film as distinct from digital.

Good luck.
