Cine Lenses on the GH1

There are a number of folks selling 16mm ARRI standard mount lens and adapter combinations on eBay and claiming they will work fine with the Panasonic GH1 Lumix cameras. Many of these will vignette badly on the GH1 camera.

Lenses that I've tested and know to vignette include:

Zeiss 8mm Distagon T2.2 in ARRI Standard mount

Schneider 10mm, 16mm and 25mm in ARRI Standard mount

Lenses that I strongly suspect to vignette include:

Zeiss Super Speed 9.5mm, 12mm, 16mm, 25mm in ARRI Bayonet or PL mount (these are the original Zeiss Super Speed 16mm/Super 16mm lenses)

Cooke Kinetal 9mm, 12.5mm, 17.5mm, 25mm, 37.5mm in ARRI standard mount

Just be aware that even though the eBay adds say these lenses will work on the Panasonic GH1, they will function, but with big black fuzzy edges on all corners of the image.

Best,

-Tim

The ebay adds say the same thing about the c mount lenses like kern etc.

i dont get every video in youtube with gh1 and these lenses is like you say with big black fuzzy edges on all corners of the image.

So why are the users after these lenses?

Is the look they are after worth the zoom they have to do for the black edges to dissapear ?

I understand that c mount are compact but other than that..

I subscribe to a Tim opinione.

Macro 4/3 cameras ( Panasonic G1, GH1, GF1, G2, G10 , Olympus PEN E-P1, E-P2, E-PL1) have sensor with 22.5 mm diagonal.

Normal 16 film gate 10,1 x 7,45 mm, diagonal 12.55mm

Super 16 film gate 12,35 x 7,45 diagonal 14,42 mm

35 mm

Academy 35 mm, film gate 22x 16 mm, diagonal 27,2 mm,

Super 35, film gate 24 x 18 mm, diagonal 30 mm.

You can see, the sensor with diagonal 22,5 mm can cover of academy 35 lenses only.

But, As of russian lenses, a some professional cine lenses of 16 mm cine cameras use of optical blocks from 35 mm cine cameras ( from 50 mm ), that's why, theoretically, this is lenses can cover of a Macro 4/3 sensor.

But, 16 mm lenses with optical blocks from 35 mm cine camera can have special mask at rear side of lens and mask will diminish final diameter of image circle.

That's why, the lens compatible or not can asnwer optical technician only after special test.

Hi Olex. Which C-mount or 16mm lenses have 35mm coverage ?

Can the mask at the rear be removed for greater image circle ?

16 mm 16 OKS-1-50-1 and 35 mm 35 OKS-1-50-1

16 mm 16 OKS-2-75-1 and 35 mm 35 OKS-2-75-1

16 mm 16 OKS-1-100-1 and 35 mm 35 OKS-1-100-1

16 mm 16 OKS-1-150-1 and 35 mm 35 OKS-1-150-1

Can the mask at the rear be removed for greater image circle ?
