Your house or your future?

Truth be told this is what I've been trying to do for the last five years. But I've got "friends" and "family" who seem to think this is an unwise idea. But you know what, I'm not even trying to shoot a feature. I'm not even trying to shoot a 15 to 20 minute trailer.

Hell, I just wanted to shoot a little five-minute something on a low end prosumer camera. Something fun. Something that was good and unique. But every single %*-ing time I approach a goal, I get the carpet pulled out from under me. It's getting extremely annoying.

Would you believe that I've shot eight student films, shot numerous home movies with friends, all before entering the industry in 87? And for all the industrials, commercials, the handful of feature films and TV series I worked on (no, never did porn), my family thinks I'm headed for disaster?

I'm really ready to get in someone's face, the likes of which will never have been seen before.

Going after my dreams makes some of the people around me very uncomfortable. Uncomfortable to the point where they have to tell me how stupid my dreams are. What they are telling me is what they tell themselves, it's their fear of doing the right thing for themselves and their own dreams. I encourage you to press forward and realize your dreams.

I'm a carpenter by day that's how I make money. Carpentry is one of my creative abilities and have been working for the same company for 30 years which is unheard of in the construction business. My heart is in film making, music, writing and acting. My day job has allowed me some funds to pursue my dreams but I've made very little money from the Arts. It's this lack of money issue that people use to beat me over the head. "If you don't make money why do it?", "There are more important things to spend your money on!", they say. It took me a long time to break free from what other people think and say.

I've been making shorts with first a HC1 then two HV20's and a HV40. I have so much fun with these cameras and they make a nice picture. But my heart was always in film. Recently I got a K3 16mm, and an Eclair NPR 16mm. This has brought a flood of comments from my friends that I've lost my mind. Film in the Digital Age?! They have no idea how much fun it is to cut film on my kitchen table.

There is always someone who will be willing to dump their negativity and fear on me. I usually smell it coming but sometimes I have a blind side and some new and improved way comes along to dump on me, for example, I converted both my 16mm cameras to Ultra16 you should hear the crap I get for doing that. I tell them all to go screw (with a smile), "I've got to me!"

I have a family, wife and two boys, a house, dog, to many cats and lots of bills. I gave my boys the two HV20's and they're loading up youtube with flicks. I set up my 16mm projector and show flicks every once in awhile, we're having fun.

I want to shoot a feature but I need a good script so I've been working on that. I still keep the door open that great things can happen if I do the work and remember to "Play", and have fun.

Really simple solution to this. Don't tell your friends or family! ;)

Theres lots of great stuff out there to shoot on for low end stuff right now. It's a good time.

Not sure what you mean about getting the carpet pulled out from you. Sometimes productions come apart for the silliest reasons. I've had things go to pieces over very minor stuff when so much else you would think was more serious was actually in place. Just learn from things and keep moving on! :)

Why? Surely you can just get on with doing your thing and not even tell anyone about it. Therefore = non-issue?

Of course I don't have much info about your exact situation.

OTOH putting yr house on the line would not be a good idea, but right now theres no need to! :)

love

I don't know of too many things more important than making money. Friends and family are two of them.

I don't want to shoot a feature. I don't even want to shoot a promotional trailer.

You know something? I don't even want to do it anymore.

Anyway I told my family that we should all sell our houses and buy this farm and we can all share money and the people who work can help out the people who are unemployed and the unemployed can stay at home and cook meals and plant gardens. Needless to say my family thinks I'm nuts but what else am I going to do in this tough economy? But I will not put a mortgage on my house to finance a film.

Perhaps I need to pick my battles. I've had family members go out and buy high definition cameras and told them that the camera was no good because it was interlaced. So no wonder they do not share my passion for film making.

But we have to end this stalemate about working for money. Yes I agree everyone needs money and everyone needs to eat. However I spent years working on my novel and so far I havn't made one dime. Yet if I waited for someone to pay me cash up front for a book deal it never would have happened. And it still may not happen as right now I have to convert the novel to a screenplay and I have to begin filming.

George,

Get a copy of this book:

The Artist's Way

Read it all the way through, then read it again.

You need to learn to stand up to the folks around you and be who you were "meant to be" or you're gonna die a bitter old man.

Good luck. It can be a tough journey, but what journey worth taking isn't?

Best,

-Tim

I don't need a book, I need money, and good a lawyer which I finally got. It's a long story. Trying to hold onto the house with low wage jobs is no fun. I'm hopefully headed in the right direction, but it's going to cost me.

I don't want to go back to freelancing. I'm too old for that. But to get some cash and produce a small film? There's no glass ceiling on that.
