Man, way too hard! I did think of your challenge in a different light. I chose the combination of film, director and cinematography that came together in such a way to

elevate all three into something truly unique or special. I came up with my choices by

voting with my money, those films that met the criteria and where I had paid money many times to view the film in a theater. The champs are:

You know I'm going to make a controversial statement, well I don't know how controversial it is really, but I don't like Kubrick. I mean his films are bombastic and overwhelming, but after the initial wonder I always forget them. I've probably given them 5/5 but in hindsight I just remember a cold spectacle. I generally don't like "show-offy" cinema, and I think Kubrick is the prime example of trying to show-off rather than tell a visual story. It's like he's trying to make the "best" film in every genre, you know, Sci-fi with 2001, horror with The Shining, comedy with Dr Strangelove etc.

 

I'd just thought I would share this because it's been bugging me for some time...

Favorite Quote:

 

John Wayne as Ethan Edwards in The Searchers: "Injun will chase a thing till he thinks he's chased it enough. Then he quits. Same way when he runs. That line is so loaded with what the character and film are about. Revenge, single mindedness and racism. It was deep, black and felt scary as was There Will be Blood.

I understand where you're coming from. I read somewhere that Kubrick often tried to use the camera to form a separation between the audience and the characters on screen. His work is truly distinct and I guess it's just not for everyone. I think the aspects that you hate about Kubrick are the ones that I love :) My list is:

Concerning Conrad Hall's famous shot from "In Cold Blood" with streaks of light from rain on a window reflected on a character's face -- is it possible that this was done years earlier by Russell Metty in the Sirk film "There's Always Tomorrow" (1956) with Barbara Stanwyck as the face in question? Saw it yesterday, and the similarity of the two shots is astounding.
