Jim Nelson
Hi, Can someone please help me out. Does 35mm film have a higher dynamic range than video? And does 35mm have higher dynamic range than 16mm? Thanks for your help :)
Brian Drysdale
This is bit of the moving target, but the new digital cameras such as the Alexa and the RED One MX are pretty close to film, as are the Sony F23 and F35. The EPIC, with HDR, looks like it may match or exceed film, there are samples on the HDR thread in the RED forum. 35mm and 16mm use the same stocks, so the dynamic range should be the same, although 16mm is more grainy and some people may not wish to do too far down into the blacks. Dynamic range can be subjective depending on how acceptable an individual DP finds the noise levels. Film is better at smoothly handling highlights compared to video (although the EPIC may be the one to match it).
Premium Member Adrian Sierkowski Posted October 7, 2010 Premium Member Share Posted October 7, 2010 A lot also depends on what film stock you mean (Kodak -v- Fuji and even then what emulsion #) as they all have slightly different responses, and can be effected by processing if one wished. It changes all the time, but as a general rule Film will capture more than digital will in terms of light with more of a usable range.
