Breaking down large rolls to small rolls by yourself

Recommended Posts

I bought a load of stock a while back and a lot it came in 1000 ft rolls. I only got 400ft and 200ft mags so I'm looking to unwind the film in many small cans.

It's 35mm.

Whats the best way to go about it without scratching the emulsion and avoiding the uneven spiral effect. (be specific if you mention machines)

thanks

Jon

Ordinary editing room rewinds made by Moviola work fine. Get one with a TiteWind attachment to produce a perfect core wound roll. Be sure to wind the film off onto a temporary reel and then back onto the 2" camera core, so as to have the edge numbers going the right way.

If it is a one time event, I may be something that your lab can do for you.

You do need a work area that meets the standard of a darkroom and have to work in total darkness. Not hard to do, (I often spool down 16mm to fit my Filmo).
