Filter tilting options

Recommended Posts

Besides Panavision and tape balls, what options are out there for tilting filters? We're constantly running 1/4 and 1/2 Black Diff FX and there is kick back on almost every shot with any kind of hot spot in the frame. We're shooting Scarlet with super speeds and currently running with an O-Box.

Well, it's a bit of a cobbled solution but you can take two trays open side to open side and use it like that. Place the bottom of the filter in one tray and the top in the other tray. There should be enough spring in the tray to hold it once you've given it a bit of paper tape top and bottom. It's not a great solution because it wastes a stage, meaning in a 3-stage LMB5 you'll only get 2 filters.

This may not help you, but perhaps someone else coming along and finding this question and wanting an alternative....

The Letus LTMB1 Matte Box comes with an anti-reflection tray out of the box. It's a bit different from usual matte boxes in that it uses a single deep top-loading tray that doesn't rotate and allows either 3 stacked 4x5.65 filters (set right on each other) or using the tray insert up to two filters at either a slight upward or downward angle. There's also a 138mm round rotary drop-in filter stage at the rear of the box for a polarizer, fader ND 138/4x5.65 combo system, or whatever else you can find in 138mm.

I own the matte box as of last week but haven't had a chance to test out the angled insert, but the rest of the box is quite nice and considerably cheaper than ARRI or OConnor at a similar build quality. Maybe worth a look for you or others. Scope it out at mastercinemaseries.com
