Blake Z Larson
I was just curious what exactly the differences are between the different materials used for diffusing light (i.e: silk, muslin, bleached muslin). What type of look/quality of light does each one give and are there any particular situations where one is better than another? Thanks, Blake
Stuart Brereton
Silk is a soft silent diffusion which generally leaves a slightly specular hotspot from the lamp. Muslin & Bleached Muslin are generally used as bounces, rather than diffusion. There are many other types of diffusion, 216, 250, 251, F1, F2 , F3, gridcloth etc, etc. They vary in how much light they absorb, and how much they diffuse the light, but many types produce the same effect. For instance there is not a great difference between 216, F3, and Gridcloth. When you are using similar materials like these, it's important to remember that it is the size of the diffusion that is important rather than whether it is 216 or 250 or F1. The larger the source, the softer it is.
