This movie was as good if not better than Independence Day (1997). Thoroughly entertaining- never a dull moment. Everyone should see this film on the big screen, it is simply amazing. See the above still? It's that times a thousand.

It's the Godzilla for the 21st century.

Yeah 2012..... I personally don't think you're missing much there. I saw it pretty recently, but can't remember much about it, -v- ID4 where, well it's pretty vivid in mind. I think 2012 was a bit like the prequels... too much "stuff" in the scene.

As for Pacific Rim; i'm still on the fence with seeing it; and what sucks is I doubt I'll have time to check it out before it leaves theaters.

lol not 4, but I recall in their marketing back in the day they called it ID4, I think, in order to emphasize the 4th of july which was it's release date.

They are apparently working on a sequel... which should surprise no one.

3-D is so 2012. It's time to make The Dogfather Experience in 4D

haha, Yeah its refered to as ID4, I still love that film, classic block buster of the day, funny thing is there making a 2 and 3 because the studios won't stop till they run every franchise and film into the ground instead of investing in new concepts, I wonder why people don't go to the movies as much

Doubt? There better be no doubt. This is the film of the summer of 2013. THE film of the SUMMER of 20 **(obscenity removed)** 13. Better make it a priority. Quit your job, quit your girlfriend- whatever it takes to get your butt into that theater seat, Adrian.

I think it's great news! I never liked the ending of I Day. Was hoping for a happy ending. Felt so bad for the visitors coming all that way, light years and light years, and then then instead of being properly welcomed after such a long trip, the humans send up a paddy wagon and flash their lights at them. How insulting, and even then the visitors show restraint and just wipe out a few ugly neo classical buildings (doing the humans a favour really, just an opportunity to produce some more interesting architechture). I mean tame stuff for a civilisation of such technology that they can travel light years across space.

I hope this time that the visitors teach those mean humans a lesson and humanity comes to its senses and treats them a bit nicer. I mean theres being rude, and theres being rude.

You seem pretty convinced about this movie, but honestly how does it stand in the canon of giant robot movies. I mean you suggest it exceeds the dizzy heights of Independence Day but can it really hold it's own against the Transformers movies? I mean the transformers are not just giant robots, but robots in disguise, which obviously takes things to a whole over level.

Where does it stand in that kind of context? I mean the transformers movies have such a strong theme of duality but Pacific Rim would have to have its own to thing to not just be a pale shadow against them. The title is at least interesting because despite the fact we know it is about giant robots, it does kind of sound like a fragrant toilet cleaner. The question is tho, can it take this beyond?

I refuse to believe that anything can achieve the dizzy heights of Independence Day.

Although I have to confess I've not seen 2012 yet.

Well, I'm tipping my hat here as to my sci-fi anime geekyness, but did you ever see a little film called Macross? The big finale with all the Hornets, Eagles, Tomcats and F-16s confronting the alien bad guy ship was taken from that film (...as was much of the story).

Have a look;

And there's nothing wrong with that.

R,

Yup! Count me in for fun! :)

Sadly it is not doing so well at the box office. I think this is a shame, and would have thought giant fighting robots would be a sure fire success but for Del Toro, it seems not in this case. It's a shame he didn't have a toy/computer game tie in aspect as I guess that must be what it takes.

Indepence Day and Godzilla were your benchmarks??!! It brings to mind the story of David Ducovney taking a leak on the Independece Day movie poster in The X-Files movie....not really sure why except maybe because film making should be a pole vault not a limbo contest, but hey, no accounting for taste, right? If you enjoyed it, more power too you, however given the B.O. returns, I gotta say there's a possibility...a GREAT possibility you're probably in the minority.....WAY in the minority . BTW, not really impressed with the screen grab, The fog density and lighting fall off are WAY off and the color is even off a little. It really does look like a composite shot. Just my opinion.

Steven, maybe you should go see the movie first before you dissed it all over the internet. You seem retarded.

I am retarted, ask anybody, but I'm not retarded enough to go plunck down 12 bucks to see the theatrical release of a giant robot vs giant alien fish movie that's loosing box office hand over fist. HOWEVER, I should see the "film", if for no other reason than to confirm what I already know, but I'll do that on event of either the DVD release or the free cable release. Look, I'm a hugh Guillermo del Toro fan. "The Devil's Backbone" is one of my favorite films of all times but let's face it, he screwed up on this one BIGTIME and it all comes down to subject matter. The ONLY reason "Transformers" sold was because of it's pedigree and Megan Fox......along with a LOT of guns, bullets, explosions and chases IE, Micheal Bay essentials. As Danny Trejo has said (paraphrasing, of course):" The essentials for a successful movie is Babes, Bullets and Bombs"

and since he starred in "Machete".....and now I guess "Machete 2" because "Machete" was such a GREAT movie (I have footage of me in an alley behind an El Paso bar, peeing on a "Machete" poster if you're interested), that's got to be right! "(He later added something else that started with a B but I can't remember what it was.) B)

The Transformers "films" were a crime against the childhoods of everyone between the age of 30 and 40 who ever watched any cartoons as a child, ever. This is from someone who would sit down with you and have a long conversation about the "awesomeness" of such "films" as Dark Descent (Dean Cain plays the sheriff character from High Noon/Outland, but this time in an underwater mining colony) and Laser Mission (Brandon Lee has to save a German Scientist from the Cuban Army while located somewhere in Africa).

Pacific Rim fell short in several places/ways, but delivered exactly what was advertised: Giant Robots fighting off Giant Monsters. More "roll your eyes" dialogue moments than you can shake a stick at, and plenty of condensed and cliche character arcs. You know, like the pilot in Avatar who's switches sides with absolutely zero story motivation to do so.

Still, as a movie trying to captivate a young audience I think it deserves more credit than it is getting (and certainly better BO). If nothing else for the fact that they were able to have the male/female lead characters sideline the typical (boring) "love story." Wifey commented that it was a better film without them having kissed or "gotten it on", because she was imagining the scene of it happening after the movie ended.

Give it a whirl when it comes your way James. I'm not here to call it the be-all-end all of the genre, nor do I think you will actually like it. I just think it deserves more credit than perhaps it is being given. If nothing else, I enjoyed watching it and later in the film some of the modeling and comps are actually quite good. Definitely better than that still in the OP.

That still is from the worst scenes (in terms of craft) in the film. Which is weird because usually the early comps are the big, elaborate, "suspend disbelief" moments and perhaps that is one of the reasons the film is not doing as well. It really is the weakest at the beginning because due to the mad amounts of exposition they shoved into the first 20 minutes or so. It got me thinking about how much more effective the beginning scenes of Star Wars are. That brief scroll at the beginning basically saved them from the boring expository beginnings that films are chained to these days and allowed them to jump right into the Star Destroyer chase and from that point everyone is in.

And please, no Evangelion movie. No one wants to watch giant stompy robots with extension cords. I'd rather watch a theatrical adaptation of FLCL than that.

Oddly, the part that bothered me the most about it was their closing title graphic sequence was an almost cut-for-cut duplicate of the one from The Avengers. It really looked like it was done by the same people. Nothing wrong with that, I guess, but I wish they had done something more original for that.

I KNOW what Del Toro was trying to do with this picture. It's all about Asia right now, that's where the money is, the Asian foreign market. I have ALWAYS HATED anime. I could never get into it but who the XXXX am I? There is a market, a HUGE market, for it and films made from it. Pacific Rim was bombing BIG-TIME until the foreign kicked in then the gap began to close somewhat. This industry is first and foremost a business and one must always be aware of what the market for our product is doing so though I don't like the concept, I must look at the results. MOST of the time, I can accurately predict which films on the horizon will work and which will bomb like a BLU-96 2,000-lb er just from the concept alone. I DO plan to give "Pacific Rim" a fair shot but from the trailer alone, I can see it's gonna be an uphill battle to like it on any level.

There was even a commercial on today for "Pacific Rim" saying essentially, "Give the movie a second chance"........Really? It's like the studio is begging for the audience they thought they should have had in the first place and can't figure out WHY the movie doesn't work. I've never seen a commercial like that for any feature film before. It's weird, it's like they're saying "Come on guys, this thing cost us a LOT of money! Forget about the reviews and bad box office sales, you should come and spend your 14 dollars to see it because it is as bad as everyone thinks it is!"

For myself, I'm gonna stick to writing low budget horror for a while because according to The Hollywood Reporter, "The Purge" and "The Conjuring" KILLED in their respective cost to profit ratios. While the tent poles languished in an ocean of Blake Snyder designed rehashed tripe that fought tooth and nail for an enormous audience to to offset their one hundred million dollar plus budgets, these little movies took in fifty times what they cost to make because WOMEN went to see them in DROVES this summer!! Even teenage and pre-teen boys get tired of seeing the same old sh!t every time their mom drops them off at the mall cineplex. But of course, I could be totally wrong and it COULD be simply that these tent poles sucked and were badly made movies.

Chances are you are right on both counts. I haven't seen most of the latest "tent-pole" movies, so I won't go into knocking them, but it's pretty easy to tell when the trailers are just an encapsulation of the entire film. I don't remember which upcoming tent-pole it was, but the trailer for it that preceded PacRim basically hit everyone one of Snyder's "beats," almost as if to reassure the audience that they will get an experience like they are used to seeing. Even Elysium, which I am really excited about, I fear will suffer from the same basic, overtly mushed into your face, structure. In retrospect, as much as I loved District 9 for it's subtext, I think it might be more tied to that basic outline than I ever really considered after seeing it.

It's too bad about PacRim on many levels for me. I'm more of a "giant mechanical war machine" fan than I am an anime fan, but I will admit that the movie is partially designed for people like me as well, albeit they are aiming for nerds my age who actually have kids, for the most part.

It's too bad that I will not be able to see The Conjuring before I leave civilization for a couple of months. I heard an interesting radio bit (taken with a grain of salt, naturally) about the film, the female leads, and how that might relate to it's successful run so far and larger than normal female audience for that genre. Supposedly it's also more "old fashioned real estate horror" from the 70s than post-torture-porn modern horror.
