Now that's you sell an indie movie. You take away the prime advertising space at the world's largest retailer, from the Hollywood studios.

It's twice the price of the vampire movie.

How exactly does that help people "Save money" and "Live Better".

So this is not the same Wal-Mart where the guy got busted for sucking on a woman's toes without permission:

If you google:

>"Against the wild" download <

you get 279,000,000 hits!

I think the bandwidth Richard needs to use for all his Takedown notices will probably exceed the amount actually used for downloads

I don't have the bandwidth to support full movie downloads, but just out of curiosity I tried starting a couple, and they just "worked".

Sure, some sites immediately tried to hustle me into giving my credit card details before doing anything useful, but two picked more or less at random just went straight into the download, no questions asked.

So the question I ask is: "What do they actually get out of it?" What's in it for them?

Somebody has gone to all the trouble of buying a Blu Ray of a recently released low-budget Indie feature, overcoming the copy protection and ripping it to 720p MKV format, and then uploading the 650MB file, so anybody can download it for free.

I can understand Richard's tooth-enamel-chipping umbrage and feelings of helpless and impotent rage and so on, what I can't understand is what they do it for.

I send the take down notices to the most trafficked sites like YouTube. Which did finally respond and removed a bunch of segments of the film that someone had uploaded. What ticks me off is that YouTube believes the uploader more than they believe the copyright holder. They allow the bootlegger to upload the video no questions asked. Getting it removed as a copyright holder is a different story. This is quite enraging as a film producer to say the least.

Those bootleg sites you are referencing above are only used by the most ardent people that don't want to pay 13 bucks for a family film. It takes quite a bit of work to pull down the files, and burn a DVD. Simply put, the process is not engaged in by "moms" and kids. Those sites also fire out a number of pop ups and links to porn sites. I hope anyone using those sites gets their computer infected with 12 million viruses.

Those selling bootleg copies on ebay are a different story. ebay refuses to pull down the auctions, even after the copyright holder has provided rock solid proof. That's ok, I have a surprise for those guys and ebay on this matter. Those auctions won't be around for too much longer.

I want to publicly state that ebay is a criminal organization that is profiting from the sale of thousands of bootlegged DVDs. The reason they refuse to take down these auctions is because they are making too much money off of them. ebay you are criminal scum bags!

R,

"Those bootleg sites you are referencing above are only used by the most ardent people"

Err.. all I did was google "Against the Wild" + "download" and it found them in no time.

My PC and browser are well protected against unauthorized add-ons, but the two "clear" download sites made no attempt to do anything like that. Most of the others didn't try anything particularly underhanded either.

Making a DVD is a snap. There's any number of freeware packages that will burn you a DVD; you just click and drag video files (which can be in assorted formats, MP4, AVI MPEG, .TS etc), slip in a blank DVD and the software does the rest. Freemake is one of the better ones but there's lots of others, all based on FFMPEG.

Some of them will even burn directly from a download site.

Definitely well within the scope of Mom and Kids

I don't think you understand the demographic for this movie very well. American and Canadian moms would much rather buy it at Walmart than create their own DVD from a bootleg site. If there are 6 moms out there who have burned their own DVDs I'll eat my hat.

Movies targeted at males aged 13-35 are a different story. So when I say the most ardent people, I mean people who want to go through the entire process of creating the DVD, not just finding the files.

For those that do burn DVDs like this....I hope they enjoy the viruses and spyware they just loaded onto their computers during the process. It's a fitting punishment for theft of material over the internet.

R,

OK, so what exactly are you so upset about?

"Daddy!! We're bored! Get us a movie!"

Daddy looks blearily out the window at 12 feet of snow.

"Aargh..." he mutters, scratching his arse, stumbles into his den and switches his computer on.

"Felicity; get Daddy a new pack of blank DVDs from the storeroom willya?

"Now lessee; what's been released recently that will keep those ankle-biters quiet for a couple of hours...?

"What's this? 'Against The Wild'? It's got a dog and kids in it, that'll do...."

Hmmm. Now you're starting to sound like Jim Jannard again

Maybe you really are him.

Perhaps the Emanuel persona was a deliberate ploy to get us off the scent.

I mean it's possible; Washington State only missed being part of Canada due to a clerical error by a nearsighted 19th century Canadian minor bureaucrat. :D

And what exactly is your connection to the film industry again?

Heh heh, that again. You and Mr J can believe whatever self-serving bullshit you find the most comforting; all I'm going to say is I'm still on first-name terms with certain people who might ask both of you the same question....

Uh you do realize there is only one of me?

All we know for sure is that you stack the shelves at a well known Australian dept store. Beyond that....nothing can be confirmed.

To Paraphrase a once-great man:

You know Richard, you've become a real idiot....

"Uh you do realize there is only one of me?"

Well....nothing can be confirmed.

Clearly this discussion has hit a nerve.

I'd really love to know that you think all this pointless blustering over illegal downloads is going to achieve.

It won't net you one cent of extra revenue, but it's sure to lose you some.

Also, anything you write in this forum is pretty much set in stone.

You might want to remember that when you try to move up to 8-figure productions....

Yes good. I'll be known as the producer that was against, and personally took action against, the illegal bootlegging and downloading of motion picture works. I won't get to everyone of course. But a number of ebay sellers are now very disappointed along with several YouTube uploaders who have had the video of my movie they uploaded taken down. Thanks to me.

I am so confused, why can't we all get along? I see where Richard is coming from on most things (scary as that may sound) and I also get where Phil et al are coming from (which is perhaps even more frightening!) (and wish I knew what Keith did better as well). What Richard has accomplished in making movies is pretty remarkable any way you want to slice it-- while at the same time the battle against illegal downloads is often tilting at windmills. However, for each small victory Richard accomplishes is a push towards retaining control of a hard won prize-- that of a distributed feature film which cost many hours and lost hairs on his own part. Of course one cannot stop all illegal downloading-- as Phil and the others point out, but does this in and of itself make it a non-worthwhile proposition? Can we not just both agree that while we cannot stop all of anything, we can do what we can to make a dent in it? Should we not all come together the celebrate the successes of anyone in this business who worked hard to get something? Further, can we not concede that try as we might the internet is a far larger place than we like to think, and despite best efforts there will always be leaks for we are not omnipotent. Canwe not finally know what Keith does-- aside from being an intelligent man and always a bit of a fun read when he's poking the fire. And, in summation shall we not all just retire ourselves together one day to get a pint?

Still very thick up on top. The stomach ulcers are a different story. :)
