Benjamin Lamb
What is the difference between shooting 2k or ARRIRAW on the Alexa? Sometimes I will see on a monitor under "sys" that someone is shooting 2k, but I don't understand how this differs from shooting on RAW.
Chris Millar
Well, I'm not an Alexa user, so unless ARRIRAW means something more specific that includes resolution in it's definition - and the same applies to '2K' in the Alexa context w.r.t colour space/bit depth - then you're comparing apples to pears. One is a specification of pixel count - 'resolution' I believe they call it. The other is a term that will infer a specification of the colour-space, bit-depth and relative distribution of data across that bit-depth (log vs lin) - something that is independent of resolution. Although together they will affect your pipeline in terms of processing power and data transfer rates from sensor to screen.
Premium Member David Mullen ASC Posted February 9, 2015 Premium Member Share Posted February 9, 2015 It's just the difference between recording a downsampled 2048 pixels across image versus 2.88K or 3.5K (open gate), and the fact that 2K will be an in-camera debayered RGB Log gamma compressed to a ProRes codec versus an uncompressed raw recording. Premium Member Dom Jaeger Posted February 9, 2015 Premium Member Share Posted February 9, 2015 Also because of the difference in file sizes, RAW requires either an external recorder or the newer Alexa XTs or XR upgrades with onboard Codex recorders whereas the ProRes options can be recorded to SxS cards, basically a quicker and simpler workflow.
