what is this plastic thing on the oconnor pan handle used for?

Hello guys, me and other people on set where wondering what this piece of plastic (it's kind of a devider) on the O'Connor pan handle between the grip part and the tie down knot is used for.

I think it's used as a spacer to clamp on zoom and focus control devices. But you didn't post a photo of it :)
