Chad Nickle
Hi Guys. So I have a scene with a locked down shot in this room I have posted below. Our light kit is somewhat limited. We have two kino 4x4 banks, two Arri 650's, Two Dedo Classic 150's, a pepper light and two small lowel pro 250's. We also have a haze machine and limited grip gear (two floppies, two 4x4 half soft frost, small flags, etc. Windows will be covered with Duvetine and all practicals will be off. We are going for a somewhat mysterious feel, like we are in a dark , ancient throne room or maybe basement of a castle ala game of thrones. One challenge is the chair we are planning to use wraps around the top of talents head (see below pic), we can use another chair if we have to, but this one is at the top of our list. I am somewhat experienced with lighting, but dramatic looks are defenantly not my speciality, I would love some ideas on how you guys would light this with the resources at our disposal. Thanks! Chad Griepentrog
cool location! definitely try to get your hands on something more powerful to punch through those 2 back windows (HMI's or even some source 4's with 1/2 CTB. the cooler colors will look great reflecting off of the floor as well. the harder & punchier the light, the better it will play with that hazer. I don't think the 650's will have enough mustard, especially if you cool them down with gels. could you get actual torches in there? or at least large groupings of old candles? if you had some strong flames near the guy in the chair, you could motivate a warm light onto him, which you could accent with a 650 dimmed down from a distance. the chair wrapping is fine. is the dark material reflective at all? if so, you could play color, flickers or other subtle reflections off of it to give a tiny bit of separation. or just hang something like an animal pelt over it (thinking barbaric story). the BG could be accented with candles and the dedos uplighting the walls behind them. in a slightly more perfect world, you'd have 2 HMI's outside the windows and a flicker box to run your accent lights off of. Premium Member David Mullen ASC Posted February 6, 2016 Premium Member Share Posted February 6, 2016 You have to have some sort of light source -- if all the practicals are off and all the windows are blacked out, then what would be the light in the scene if it were real? Premium Member Satsuki Murashige Posted February 6, 2016 Premium Member Share Posted February 6, 2016 I really love this promo from Season 1 of 'Game of Thrones': Depending on what look you're going for, the sources don't necessarily need to be motivated in reality. Think smoke, backlight, edge light, top light, textures, high contrast and I'll think you'll be headed in the right direction.
Chad Griepentrog
i agree. standing candelabras would be a good place to start. and using those windows.

Chad Nickle
[Thanks guys, those actually are not windows behind him, but a wine cellar. I ended up putting a 650 through some cardboard with some slits, using a kino for a bit of fill camera right, and put a pepper light on his face. I left some practicals on in the background and put a kino in the wine room to light the bottles. All in all I'm pretty happy with how it turned out, there is definitely some things I will do differently next time we use this room. Cheers. Premium Member Satsuki Murashige Posted February 12, 2016 Premium Member Share Posted February 12, 2016 Turned out pretty good, I like it! Nice job. The only things I would have changed would have been to cover those electrical outlets with props and also to hide a small light behind the throne to glow the wall and silhouette the throne better. Good idea! I did have a small blue LED for a kicker on the back of the chair, but it's hardly noticeable. I was able to remove the outlets in post because it was a locked down shot. Thanks again.
