Lightweight camera setup, WCU-4 without Rods

Recommended Posts

Hi!

I'm shooting a film handheld with the arri alexa plus 4:3 and the focus puller is going to use WCU-4.

I have a lightweight matte box that fits 15' rods. When we put the wireless motor on the rods it is out of reach for the lens, being that the rods are too close to the lens for the motor to reach on to it. I'm wondering how we can fit this on without using rods at all. Is this possible? If I clamp the matte box right to the lens.

You will need at least one rod of some kind. However, they do not need to be mounted from the bottom. I would ask the rental house for a bracket that allows you to mount top rods. Usually, mounting from the top allows the motors to fit better because it can be placed further away from the lens mount so it can swing further towards the lens. This can be helpful if the lens is large. Also, gravity will keep the motor from disengaging.
