Max Field
Obviously not an expert on lenses, but regardless of focal length or aperture settings some of my lenses flare up way more than others. I was wondering if there was any cheap glass out there that flared up a lot, might come in handy for a music video shoot one day. Preferably PL and EF mount if possible. As always, thank you. Jeff L'Heureux
You'd probably have an easier time using a filter to produce flare effects rather than an individual lens. Then you could get the same effect across any lens. A higher end product would be something like Schneider's True Streak filter line or something similar: https://www.schneideroptics.com/ecommerce/CatalogSubCategoryDisplay.aspx?CID=2216 Then, there are cheaper, DIY methods as well which involve scratching or marking filters by hand in various patterns. Youtube has a bunch of these tutorials.
Premium Member David Mullen ASC Posted May 25, 2016 Premium Member Share Posted May 25, 2016 Zooms will generally create more flare than primes due to the greater number of glass elements.
Stuart Brereton
Any lens will flare if you hit it hard enough with light. Generally, older, non multicoated lenses will flare easier, so try looking for stills lenses from the 1960s. Lenses back then were often single coated, which is not the same as the uncoated lenses which are currently fashionable, but shares some qualities.
