Brian Rose
Hey all! I'm trying to pull off a particular lighting effect for my documentary. I want to highlight particular details on a photograph, and would love to do an effect akin to the old silent film iris in/out where in a spot of light on the document/photo contracts or expands. Is there an iris type attachment I can mount on the end of a snoot, to achieve this effect? Your help would be most appreciated! BR
Shachar Alfie
you can mount an iris on an ETC S4 http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/435143-REG/ETC_7060A1012_400RS_Drop_in_Iris_for.html/pageID/accessory
JD Hartman
For even greater control, rent a followspot.
Stuart Brereton
For even greater control, rent a followspot. He's trying to light a photograph. I think a followspot might be overkill...
Shawn Sagady
Yes you can put an iris into a Source 4, this is probably your best bet. The iris must go into the focal plane of the light or it wont have sharp edges.
Gregg MacPherson
Maybe someone knows how these effects were done back then. Was it basically a matte effect, with an "iris" in front of the lens?
Premium Member David Mullen ASC Posted August 5, 2016 Premium Member Share Posted August 5, 2016 Basically the silent camera people used something like a theatrical lamp iris in front of the lens. This is the one that goes into a Source-4 ellipsoidal: http://vignette4.wikia.nocookie.net/taff/images/4/44/Etc-source-four-iris.jpeg/revision/latest?cb=20120721230305
JD Hartman
He's trying to light a photograph. I think a followspot might be overkill... Doesn't have to be a traditional 2k followspot or a Xenon. It can be as small as a 575w. Just an alternative to a S4 Leko with an iris.
Stuart Brereton
Dedolight make an iris for their Tungsten heads. A focusable 150w lamp should be ample to light a photograph.
Premium Member David Mullen ASC Posted August 5, 2016 Premium Member Share Posted August 5, 2016 If it's just to light a photograph, you might as well just cut a round hole in some black card and put it on a c-stand in front of the light. But if you need it to close in / open up you need an iris.
