andrew ward
What happens if you remove the intensifier or diffusion panel from the front of an Arri Skypanel? Is it a death blast like Cyclops? Its something to do with blue leds being harmful like an Area 48 or something isnt it? Just wondering...
Premium Member Phil Rhodes Posted September 6, 2016 Premium Member Share Posted September 6, 2016 It turns off. Usually. I had some on demo recently and one of them was a prototype which didn't. Presumably the safety switches are actually installed on all the real ones. They said that it wasn't dangerous as long as you didn't state into them, but I preferred caution. Those are some very, very, very intense points of light in there, and I would avoid looking at them for fear of eye damage. P
andrew ward
Be good to get more punch out of it. Theyre not bright enough.
Premium Member Phil Rhodes Posted September 23, 2016 Premium Member Share Posted September 23, 2016 Personally I prefer non-diffused LED panels. You can always diffuse them; you can't un-diffuse something that's already got basically 216 diff in front of it. That said if you pull the diffuser on a SkyPanel, you'll just get lots of shadows. The emitters aren't in any sense directional.

Very bright and harsh, no safety switch on the unit that I could find. Based on the cautions in the operating instructions, probably emits a lot of UV as well. Premium Member Phil Rhodes Posted October 1, 2016 Premium Member Share Posted October 1, 2016 Hmm. Arri told me they should all have the safety switches, so either you've got faulty ones (more probably) I've been lied to. Certainly some of the ones I had on demo did have switches. I think it was the s30 that didn't. What were you using? P

Premium Member Phil Rhodes Posted October 3, 2016 Premium Member Share Posted October 3, 2016 Hrm, that's a bit disquieting. I'm not sure what else to say, really. Did you ask the supplier?
JD Hartman
I would have to ask ARRI, since they were just unboxed. Don't have the time just yet. I see nothing in the user manual, etc. that would indicate that they have any kind of safety switch.
Premium Member Phil Rhodes Posted October 3, 2016 Premium Member Share Posted October 3, 2016 Some of those I had on demo certainly did.
Jean Gonzales
S-30, S-60 none of them turn off when you remove the diffuser. Have done this many times. Didn't get my hands yet on the S-120. Edited October 15, 2016 by Jean G
