Hello everyone,

I am looking to buy some lighting units (including Kino's, par cans, Fresnels 300w to 1k's) and some grip equipment (6x6 and 8x8 silks and gryffs as well as various clamps and flags).

 

The only catch is that I can only buy from someone who has a company through which they will sell the equipment to me ( for very complicated reasons which I won't go into, I need reciepts from a company not a private person).

They've got pretty much everything and the prices are usually near the lowest.

I geared up my package from a variety of sources:

 

Modern Studio Equipment - www.modernstudio.com - ask for Jiro. They had a hard time fulfilling my $11K order in a timely fashion but they definitely made up for it in the end. Just give them sufficient lead time. Get them to send you the printed catalog and download their pricing spreadsheet from their website.

 

The Rag Place - while I didn't get my rags from them, they are highly regarded by other pros in my town. www.theragplace.com

 

B&H - They almost always have the best prices on lights. I discovered they were selling a midget barndoor at near cost.

 

Pyramid Films - They post their HMI's and other gear on eBay as well as rep the Bardwell & McAllister line. www.pyramid-films.com & www.bmlighting.com. But be really careful. I've received some real crappy used gear from them. They have been happy to rectify the situation but it's a pain having to deal with it. Be very clear about what you are getting - "I thought I ordered BEEFY babies!"

 

eBay! - I just scored a 9-light FAY for $180 - with five working globes! Many ebayer's are companies that can print a receipt for you.

 

One other thing: You're not setting up shop in Austin, Texas are you? ;)

Thanks for your reply! I am actually going to get my stands etc.. from Modern probably next week, and have already ordered a bunch of open faces and fresnels from B&H for really good prices, the only piece of the puzzle that really seems to be missing is were I can get the cheapest deal on some kino-Flos! I really want somee but the prices I got from Bandpro are way too high for me, do you know of anywhere???

and by the way i'm in LA

Have you thought about the Lowel daylight flo kits:

I've checked them out at a distributor here in Maryland and what I like about them-aside from being quite a bit cheaper than Kino's- is that the units fold up into their own case, rather, they are a case unto themselves. Very good idea. Also, the fold out "barndoor" is highly reflective, unlike the Kinos, so when you fold them out, the 1'x2' unit is more like a 1 1/2'x2' unit.
