Jon O'Brien
If one is clever about it, are anamorphic lenses really all that more expensive to hire or buy compared to spherical cine lenses? I'm talking about 2:1 anamorphics. From what I can see, I'm not so sure.
Stuart Brereton
Depends on what you're talking about. Master Anamorphics are very expensive to rent or buy. Kowas are considerably cheaper. Realistically, a cheap anamorphic is still going to be more than a cheap spherical lens. In addition to that, you're going to need a camera with a 4:3 sensor, or at least a crop mode. In the case of Alexa, for example, this means you have to rent the most expensive model.
Premium Member Mark Kenfield Posted August 31, 2017 Premium Member Share Posted August 31, 2017 There doesn't actually appear to be a huge difference in price between the shiny new anamorphics from Cooke and Zeiss and their top-end spherical glass (5/i and Master Primes). But it's all very expensive stuff regardless. Huge shoutout to Brent and the whole team involved in the tests, it's a remarkable achievement and an incredible resource. So thank you all, sincerely.
