Good Lighting Resources

Recommended Posts

I wanted to know is there any good lighting resource material that anyone would recommend? I know that experience is the best teacher. I'm looking for books or videos to show how to manipulate light to get the look that a director is looking for?

Thanks,

"Film Lighting" by Kris Malkiewicz is brilliant, and features excellent advice from David Mullen!

I'm also a fan of "Matters of Light and Depth" by Ross Lowell

Check out "Motion Picture and Video Lighting" by Blaine Brown

Also:

"Five C's of Cinematography", "Painting with Light", and "Masters of Light"

Video wise, definitely watch all of Luke Seerveld's videos on YouTube, which is his "Meet the Gaffer" series. Matt Workman's videos on lighting are fantastic, and he has the market cornered on pre-vis lighting.

There are tons of little videos online. I'm trying to compile them and will be adding them to this playlist:

Finally, I recommend watching your favorite cinematography movies with the sound off. Grab stills and try to think of how you would recreate it. Draw the overheads, make best guesses. You'll start to see the techniques and decisions the DP made.
