Very cool! Yea, I've been doing it since I was a kid. My early films (mostly shot on super 8 and my VHS camcorder in the 80's and early 90's) were all about steam railroading. I'm more into the historical aspects, but I can appreciate the modern stuff as well.

I do little mini-docs like this mostly:

Oh I've shot a lot with the XH-A1 actually, for the time and what was available, it was a great little camera. I even strapped it to my laptop at one point to record when I ran out of tapes.

Oh good, yea that's lots of fun. I work with resolve all day long most days and it's super fun to learn those tricks.

I find myself so unmotivated these days. I figured being stuck at home would be great to catch up on stuff I've been meaning to do, but all it's done is made me more lazy! ? It's so hard to stay motivated when I know I'll be stuck here for at least another month. ?

I'm crazy for steam. If I had some $$ I'd like to tour around and ride the heritage rails.

Man it must have been something back then. Wish I could go back in time ...

During my youth, I had done most of the major steam railroads across the country. For a few years, it was our family summer vacation. We had to drive because flying and hotels cost too much, so we couldn't spend too much time on the west coast. However, east of the rocky mountains, we've done most of them. However today, so many have reopened (many have closed) so it's time we go and do it again! haha ?

Me too, I'd love to go back to right after the war when the country was budding, 1947/48 ish.

There are a few really cool time capsules in the US. The Nevada Northern, East Broadtop and Cass scenic are the three best for that sort of work. All three railroads contain their original steam engines and are so out in the middle of nowhere, you would never tell it's 2020. East Broadtop has been closed for awhile, but they're trying to get back open again for the 2021 season and are spending millions to get their rolling stock ready. Nevada Northern and Cass Scenic are both normal operating steam railroads, even though Nevada Northern doesn't have much track to ride on, the shops, station, freight yard, are amazing places to take pictures. I haven't been yet, but I talk to the owners online all the time and I can't wait to go.

I hear ya, 99% of Americans in this situation don't take the opportunity to ramp up that entrepreneurial scheme they've always thought of, or start writing that brilliant novel they know they can write.

I'll work on other projects, but my normal motivation just doesn't exist. I have a script to write, but I'm constantly being interrupted by other work and other business. That's one of the main things I dislike about wearing a dozen hats, I can't just shut down and focus. Where I'd love to wear one hat, I tried that before, I got fat and bored. So I wear a dozen hats and it keeps me hella busy, but it makes it super hard to motivate. I find myself staring at my computer screen or sitting in my garage for hours, just thinking about what needs to be done, let alone doing anything about it. By the time I'm done thinking, it's too late to do whatever I thought, plan to deal with it the next day, but the next day comes and I'm captured by one of my clients to work on something else, which drives me to forget whatever that plan was lol ?

I guess it's a good problem to have too much work.

I've been home from work since the end of March. My office gym is closed, so I've gotten these out and moved them into the living room.

I've also got approximately 120 books (hardcover, paperback and e) to chip away at. I've been going on very long walks - finally exploring the massive parks that are only 15 minutes away. And begun digging into Amazon shows I've passed over for far too long, like Bosch and Goliath.

Apologies for ignoring the forum for a while.

Since my lodge can't meet for a while I've dived into bluescreen for a video to share with the chaps next (non) meeting- the toast to absent friends is something we do at dinner. A bit of a Lightworks project as well- I still don't know why some of it works. Took about 20 takes, as well. I'm no actor.

Was going to shoot some B roll for my short, but the Lockdown has just made the process much more expensive:

edit_stock.thumb.jpeg.a0ca6e20e9ebef9772b847a4637141e3.jpeg

Beachy Head is only 5 miles from my house, but I can't get into work to borrow a camera. So it's a bit annoying sourcing stock footage that I could easily self shoot. But I'd rather get the film done then wait for the restrictions to be lifted.

Just about to ease the lockdown here in NZ. I've been having a massive tidy up at my place. Some of it long overdue. Some of the film looked good for scratch tests etc but some had a fine dust or mold on the outside of the rolls. There was a clean 400' can of 35mm Ilford PAN F in that pile. We'll see....

Recently been doing lots of color grading tests on vintage films. I'm working in a new direction of strong temperature / hue and low saturation. Never thought about that before. I usually would be on the plus side of sat, like 110% - 125%.  Now I'm in the 10% - 20% area of sat.

Over the hump with still photo acquisitions for my Sodbusters film. Maybe 60% done. Very slow process reviewing 1200+ photos and downloading 1 by 1. Then have to clean them up and PP.

I shot a 2 minute film for Roger Corman's Quaratine Film Challenge.  That was actually about a month ago now but the results aren't in yet and it's probably the most exciting thing I've done.  Hacking away at a screenplay.  Spending far too much time looking at facebook and playing word games on my phone.  Long walks with my wife and the dog.  Now that the days are nicer we're doing a fair amount of gardening.  Watched "Paper Moon" again two nights ago and "Sanjuro" for the first time last night.

Revision of a Kern-Paillard Yvar 75-2.8. For the first time in my career I experience that a lens withstands all my attempts at separating the two innermost sleeves that enclose the diaphragm. Looks like I have to up my tooling with hard gripping collets. Besides that a number of 16mm cameras to queue up for overhaul. Luckily my back is better now after a couple weeks full of painful walking around askew. And at last I have found a lens that I believed lost but there it is in a carton box, disassembled. Of course do I not know anymore why I had torn it apart. Will find out upon reassembly, I suppose. My partner’s grandchildren here today were refreshing, three little gowners. So sweet, so cunning

I had been a volunteer working round the clock for the last 5 years to get things scanned and uploaded to the I.A.. Any money I would get beyond basic living expenses would go to them. I wrote them to inquire why then banned me, but no reply as of yet.

I was especially mad as they deleted over 200 hours of unscoped covid-19 airchecks I made over a 6 week period from the early part of the pandemic. I figured it was going to be an important part of history to document what unfolded.

Not many other outlet's for my Archive. I have 80+ WordPress sites, but they could go poof at any time. That was what happened to Tumblr. I had spent 4 years making 48 Tumblrs. Then one day they decided to pull the plug on me and I lost it all. Same thing with Wiki Commons. Spent a year sending in uploads, one day someone got a hard-on for me and they deleted them all. YouTube, Vimeo, LinkedIn have all pulled the plug on me in the past. I joined again under different names, but can't send in much or they will ban me.

And I never really started on my films either. I have about half a million feet that need to be scanned. All small subject 8mm and 16mm reels, very rare stuff.

Really sickening how you can waste your life away. I'd like to give up on the archival / social doc work, but it is all I know. I'm old, just got a few years left, so not much time to reinvent myself.

..well, that is what is happening on 5.25.2020.

That sounds disheartening. If this keeps happening to you again and again, you must have an inkling of why that is?

Dunno why Uli

It has been the same material, same everything for 5 years and no violation, then yesterday boom, a violation.

I heard back today from the I.A. here is their email:

"Hi, It appears that the materials you have uploaded violate the Terms of Use.
Your account will remain locked.  Best, Jeff,  Internet Archive Team"

So that was the kiss off I got for 5 years of volunteer work Uli.

If I was rich I could open up my ow archive online, but as soon as you stop paying the bills...it goes poof! Some of that material I donated to the I.A. was a crazy amount of work. With the Darktown Comics it took months to acquire and then post process. Same with the sheet music archive.

Well, I may try to sell some of it on eBay. No place else to go with it. I will sell 'instant archives' on M-discs for big money.

I don't want to sell it, I used to give it all away for free. But if I have to burn discs and mail them I want to be paid for doing things I don't want to do.  If they don't want to pay $50 or $75 for a Blu-ray data disc then let it die with me when I kick off.

One small minded curator I proposed a donation to rejected it and said it was already on the I.A.

She was small minded for 2 reasons:

1) Having to download 150 big files is not the same as having it all broken down for instant access on a DVD.

2) It is not available any longer sicne my I.A. account was shut down. That underscores the importance of archives backing up other archives.

Now Uli, it is one thing if you got 5 years worth of warning violations. But I got only 1 shutdown in 5 years and no warnings. And the shutdown was from a computer glitch that said I was a spammer. But they reinstated immediately.

Have you Cine Tracer that works on Unreal engine?

I haven't yet, mostly because it doesn't support Ray Tracing on a Mac (which is the only computer I have)

Oh OK. I find it very interesting but I haven't been able to get around to it. But I have been trying myself with Blender.
