Chris Worner
Hi, I am curious, is there a specific name for this effect used in the Superman title? Was think about trying to recreate it with a 35mm slr camera as an experiment. Cheers!
KH Martin
Streak photography, probably using the slit-scan process. In fact, here you go: https://www.artofthetitle.com/title/superman/
Premium Member David Mullen ASC Posted April 14, 2020 Premium Member Share Posted April 14, 2020 For a still image, it's easy -- zoom in or out while using a very long shutter time. For moving pictures, it is a bit more complicated to do it optically (read up on slit-scan...)
Robino Jones
I did 2 slitscan logos for projects recently. You will need a motion control and a precise way to trigger your SLR for every frame (long exposure). These 2 logos were done using a Canon 5DMKII. Next step is using a film camera and go the whole way ? Exposure time was 15sec for each frame in both examples. Password: slitscan And this one, the logo is at the end. No computer generated elements in this - all practical. Computer used for compositing only. Edited April 14, 2020 by Robino Jones 2
Chris Worner
@KH Martin @David Mullen ASC Thanks you very much! @Robino Jones Hey man nice work, thanks for the technical info! I'v seen plenty videos on how to do it in AE but the results look way too digital and perfect such as the example below: -Chris
Alissa Alexina
Wow, doing practical slit-scan effects sounds crazy! Anyway, this discussion inspired me to make my own Superman-trubute-style video bumper (specifically striving to make it look less digital and imperfect for a vintage vibe): 1
