Film Grain Aspect Ratio in Anamorphic Mode

Recommended Posts

Honestly, it's personal preference.

I shot this on the Alexa Mini with Atlas lenses and added the grain after desqueezing:

In theory, if you shot on film, then the grain would be stretched. But, does it have to be?

Hmm, it seems that the jpg compression is hiding the grain. I can send a .png to you via email if you'd like.

There's no law on the books requiring that the grain be squeezed if that's what you mean by "does it have to be".  At the near subliminal level that most grain exists at, I think it's hard to tell whether it is squeezed or not. But if you're afraid that your post-added grain looks like post-added grain, then I suppose taking the extra step of squeezing it to match the optics isn't a bad idea.
