Premium Member Phil Rhodes Posted June 7, 2021 Premium Member Share Posted June 7, 2021 That's a very broad question; is there a specific problem you're trying to solve? The black and white levels aren't specifically defined, other than relatively, at least in a scene-referred sense.

Jon Pais
I should clarify that in many circumstances, the colorist will be using a lower or higher value and that 203 is only a recommendation for 1,000 nit peak brightness displays. That figure get progressively higher for displays brighter than 1,000 nits. The problem is, if you've got graphics at 203 nits over a dark image, they may overpower the scene, whereas if the scene is very bright, the graphics may be difficult to see. Larger areas of diffuse white may also appear brighter than a small area. Because the overall image is quite dark in many HDR programs, on Netflix, I often find the white subtitles too powerful. So I would just take the 203 nits number as a suggestion, nothing more. Edited September 5, 2021 by Jon Pais
