Beaulieu s2008 Cleaning question (mirror/glass)

Recommended Posts

Hello again, I recently got my test roll back on my Beaulieu s2008. (The link to the test roll is at the bottom.) If I am not mistaken, it seems like there is dust on the mirror. Also, the ground glass for the camera seems super dirty but if the switch for the focussing glass is not active then it shouldn’t be affecting the image like this right? I have sensor cleaning fluid and lens tissues. Would that be good to clean the mirror and glass with? Lastly, when putting the plastic cover back onto the lens mount, what glue should I use?

Thanks again for the help!

The mirror and ground glass are a seperate light path to what gets exposed on the film. They are purely for the reflex viewfinder, so nothing on the mirror or ground glass will affect the recorded image.

The spots in your footage are probably from the internal wratten filters. Shooting at a very small stop increases the depth of focus so that specks on surfaces near the film plane like the internal filters can become visible. It can be hard to see the filters, which are between the mirror and the gate and can be switched between daylight and clear depending on the type of film.

It’s less likely to be something on the lens, but you should check that just in case. If it was something on the lens, you would see it in the viewfinder, whereas the filters are behind the mirror, so the spots wouldn’t be visible to you, and only show up on the footage.

I suspect you need the filters replaced or removed, which is probably a job best left to a Beaulieu specialist like Bjorn Andersson. Or get another camera.

It's the filter. Remove the lens, take a cotton wool tip or so, and remove the filter by gently pushing it out from the inside to the ountsinde (c-mount thread). There are two,  one KR15 and a clear one, they are moved by the filter key in the grip.  You can remove the c-mount thread plate before, peel off the black cover and remove the 4 screws. Is easier then. Afterwards for you need a KR15 filter for Tungsten film at daylight. May be, the lengs must bei collmated after the procedure, but in most cases it is fine.

The W85/clear filter is a very important part of the whole optical system on your Beaulieu 2008S camera.

By removing the internal filters, the optical distance is changed about 0,05-0,08mm and will change the back focus. The tolerances for this distance is only +/- 0,01mm on this 1,9 Angenieux lens.

It need to be readjusted to get proper focus.
