Daniel D. Teoli Jr.
Someone on eBay had a film about a nudist camp. They said magnetic sound was added later and then a commentary recorded. Was it very pricey to add magnetic sound to a film? Was magnetic sound used mainly for post sound addition to silent films? Or did they have magnetic sound film they ran through the camera to record sound live? What sort of recording device did they use to record on the magnetic strip when adding sound to a film? Thanks Edited June 30, 2021 by Daniel D. Teoli Jr.
Premium Member Tyler Purcell Posted July 1, 2021 Premium Member Share Posted July 1, 2021 Yea Kodak did this process (among other labs) to glue on magnetic stripes after the film was processed. I recently stumbled upon some advertisements that said the cost was around $1.25/ per 50ft for 8mm. It can't imagine how much it was for 16mm, probably similar per foot. Magnetic sound through camera was long dead for commercial use by the 60's, everyone was doing double system outside of news gathering. They made magnetic sound on film up until the mid 80's for news work, it was a special type of reversal VNF film.
