Before Photoshop...they had opaque

Before Photoshop, opaque was used to drop out the background or for retouching. Opaque came in red, black or white. The paper image was marked up with some opaque notes and the final opaqueing was done on the litho film after the process camera shot the screened halftone before plate burning.
