B roll vs Master shot?

Recommended Posts

Does the B roll mimic the main camera as far as framing and is just shot from another angle. Or can the B roll be a wide shot of the whole scene?  It is my understanding that wide shots are called Master shots.

The master shot may not be a wide shot, it's a long one (timewise) that captures all or most of the action in a scene. Often it is a wide shot, but it can be more complex than that, Spielberg is a director who can have fluid master shots (not always involving camera movement).
