Aaton XTR battery conversion - updates?

I am wondering whether the original Aaton battery 'system' using 12 volts 1,4 Ah batteries on my XTR can be 'modified' to use more modern batteries that are easier to keep charged and whatever other 'better' performance we can get. I have a constant fear of my batteries becoming useless. Please supply options with links. Obviously the connection would be the same XLR style I imagine....

I would sent it in to Du-All to have them re-celled. Shops that re-cell batteries usually have a battery tab spot welding machine, that introduces very little heat to the cells, unlike when you try and solder them by hand with a soldering iron, which can overheat the cells and reduce their lifetime.
