Raymond Zrike
Just saw on their website that they're closing down this year: http://www.abakus.co.uk/. Support on products going forward not guaranteed. Unfortunate to lose another niche cine products manufacturer. Karim D. Ghantous
So they made lenses, or modified them? It's odd that they are closing down, seeing as Netflix etc. are producing a lot of new original shows. And with new shows come the need for more hardware. Raymond Zrike
They mainly modified lenses and sold adapters, though they sold some lenses of their own for very specific use-cases. A high-end production wouldn’t really need anything they were manufacturing, especially shot digitally, so I don’t think they were getting any Netflix business or anything of the sort. Brian Drysdale
They made useful optical accessories. Things like the adapter that converted standard 16 zooms to Super 16 or 2/3" HD zooms to Super 35, the latter being handy if you're shooting natural history with a RED, when you wanted a large zoom range. It isn’t odd, anything serviced through a rental house which will be 99 percent of shows bought by Netflix and the like will already have that gear, Abakus will be missed (especially the b4>s16 adapter) but there’s basically zero between these two markets.
