Raymond Zrike
Does anyone know if the Super-16 Zeiss 50mm Super Speed MK II covers super 35? Any test footage out there? My 25mm Super Speed comes close to covering.
Premium Member Uli Meyer Posted July 30, 2022 Premium Member Share Posted July 30, 2022 Does your 35mm camera mirror clear the back of the lens? I know that Super 16mm Ultra primes don't fit onto an Arricam.
Raymond Zrike
The only time I’d use it for super-35 purposes would be digitally, so likely adapted to a mirrorless camera like my Sigma fp, maybe an Alexa Mini or Blackmagic Ursa at some point. I’ve heard about the mirror issue regarding S16 lenses on 35mm film cameras, so I definitely wouldn’t tempt fate with that. I was just concerned more with sensor coverage. I’m considering buying one for the purpose of using with my SR3 and ACL, but I’m just wondering if I’d also get some use out of it digitally too, considering it’s not a focal length I use too often for super-16 anyway. Ben Marshall
According to the CVP lens coverage tool the mk3 super16mm superspeed covers super35. https://cvp.com/tools/cameralens Looking at http://cinematechnic.com/optics/zeiss_super_speed_f1-2_lenses_pt2/ : '[The 50mm f1.2 Planar super16 mk2] is an incredibly sharp lens and actually covers 35mm (academy) but is soft in the corners. Because of the position of the rear element, the 50mm for 16mm format should never be fitted to a 35mm reflex camera, due to the risk of damage to the mirror shutter."

It’s probably the best coverage tool out there at the moment, lots of lenses in the database, and importantly it checks them at both infinity and close focus, as well as wide open and stopped down. Premium Member Tyler Purcell Posted July 30, 2022 Premium Member Share Posted July 30, 2022 Very interesting, the 50mm Optar I have, does not cover S35mm, it's close, but it vignettes pretty badly with S35mm. With N35mm, it may not be so bad.
