Lighting long takes with practicals

Recommended Posts

Hello!

I am preparing a no budget short film, and the crew is essentially composed of myself and on occasions friends I can rope into helping me.

The film is composed of a series of dollyshots (I've built a homemade dolly using skateboard wheels, pvc tubes and a wooden board) in and outside a house.

Most of the shots will be at night, so I will be using practicals to light them. I would like to go for this kind of low key light, high contrast:

(sorry I couldn't upload them directly).

What would your recommendations be in terms of bulbs, shades and techniques to obtain the desired look?

I am shooting on a BMPCC original. I chose a cinemascope ratio, i want to emphasize the space engulfing the different characters. After trying the different SIRUI anamorphic lenses, I found that they are too "zoomed in" (even the 24mm) and give me very little wiggle room for filming in relatively tight spaces. I will go with the Rokinon 12mm and crop in premiere. I understand I will reduce vertical lines to 813, but I am willing to take the loss in quality for the scope format.

Thank you!!
