Hello,

I've got all the majority types of filters and wanted to check whether I have missed anything really important as a cinematographer. If so, could you let me know which one so that I can plan to add it to my collection.

When you are only shooting video, then you should be fine. (Maybe two exceptions: What about a circular polarizer to prevent reflections? And what about gradient filters (ND and/or colored)?)

When also shooting film, you are missing all the „usual suspects“ (Wratten 80a and Wratten 85 for color; yellow, orange, red, green and blue for b&w).

Hi Paul,

There are tons and tons of filters from several different manufacturers to choose from. The first thing I noticed (as mentioned above by Joerg) is that there are no solid ND filters. If you were looking to match your set, I'd go with the Schneider Rhodium FSND 0.3-1.2. Most jobs don't tend to need past that given that a lot of digital cameras are including built in NDs nowadays.

I would also recommend a set of Diopter Filters. 138mm seems to be the most flexible format for this type of filter and typically you only need the 1/2-2 strength but other strengths do exist outside those strengths.

If you're looking to expand on different diffusion options I would also look at Tiffen or Formatt for some other options as they are (especially Tiffen) extremely common in the rental world in Los Angeles.

Hello Joerg & Matthew,

Thanks for the responses. I didn't get full NDs because I am using Sony FX9 with variable END & also have the Polarpro 8,16 & 64 82mm filters for my Sony A7SIII.

I got the following filters after I posted this.

Schneider 4 x 5.65" 2mm Indigo True-Streak Filter
Schneider 4 x 5.65" 2mm Blue True-Streak Filter
Schneider 4 x 5.65" 2mm Clear True-Streak Filter
Schneider 4 x 5.65" True-Streak Rainbow Filter
Schneider 4 x 5.65" True-Streak Confetti Filter
Schneider 4 x 5.65" Rhodium® FSND 0.3 Soft Edge Horizontal
Schneider 4 x 5.65" Rhodium® FSND 0.6 Soft Edge Horizontal
Schneider 4 x 5.65" Rhodium® FSND 0.9 Soft Edge Horizontal
Schneider 4 x 5.65" Rhodium® FSND 1.2 Soft Edge Horizontal
Schneider 4 x 5.65" Rhodium® FSND 1.5 Soft Edge Horizontal

Now I've planned to get the diopters as you suggested but not the 138mm but the lindsey optics on

Lindsey Optics Tray Mount Close-Up Lens Diopter Set

Rotating Split Field Diopters for deep focus cinematography (lindseyoptics.com)

Lindsey Optics Rota-Pol for cinematography

I'm planned to get all the above filters (11 of them) & I think this should complete my filter toolkit for around majority of my work planned. Could you let me know whether there is anything I have skipped beyond the rota pola, diopters or split diopters.

Thanks again for your responses.

Paul
