  1. No you're not alone in the mistakes department. If the images you saw were perfect and there was no double exposure chances are that in telecine someone got mixed up on which batch was going to which tape. If you elected a one light, un-supervised transfer, it could be that an intern was handling the telecine at 2am and just got a little sloppy.
  2. Walter, The second time I sent them my film, I called them up and gave them my instructions and I fondly remember them saying to me on the other end, "Did you take the lens cap off this time?" Ouch. :( This business is all about brutal honesty.
  3. The very first time I shot my own 16mm, I used a non-reflex Bolex camera with a turret mount and a parallax viewfinder. I bumped the lens turret wrong and because I was looking through a parallax viewfinder, I didn't realize that I was exposing n-o-t-h-i-n-g. When I got the Beta tape back, I was the laughing stock of the transfer house. 10 seconds of color bars and 6 minutes of black screen. Oh it was beautiful. And off-topic, hey Chance, how's "Interplanetary" doing these days? The teaser you guys did for the Sidewalk Scramble looked good.
  4. Ahh...any idea when we'll know more? I'm just super-curious because the design has me intrigued. A 2-perf XTR has me giddy....
  5. Just curious but has it been stated yet what frame rates this camera will shoot at or how variable the shutter angle will be? If anybody knows, let me know.

Can any of you guys confirm if the vignette problems I've been hearing about are true? I've read on a few forums that between 10mm and 25mm on the lens that some cameras are experiencing mild vignetting in the upper left and upper right corners. Thanks.
  7. Stephen, In your experience, do Zeiss Standard Speed Primes T2.1 cover Super 35 pretty well? And how well would those cover a 3 perf frame? Joe Walker
  8. Hey all, I've heard that there are several lenses that don't fully cover Super 35...mainly older zeiss primes and some zooms. Could any of you guys clear this up for me as to what lenses will and won't cover Super 35? Thanks. Joe Walker
  9. Funny you should ask, I had them make me one, and it really only reduced the sound by like 3db. So yes...and no. It really all depends on what environment you're shooting in. Don't get me wrong, it's a great little camera, but be prepared for a few shortcomings.
  10. I had mine converted back in 2002. Here is a link to a film I did with it and some pictures of the converted camera: http://www.commiecam.com/fiend.html Anatoly Taldykin at Slow Motion Inc did the conversion. Super 16mm, PL mount, 8-50fps crystal motor with digital counter, grey paint job. My only beef with those cameras is that they're, IMHO, MOS cameras. Yeah, it's only 41-45db, but when you're shooting in a interior room with a wood floor, and solid walls, your sound guys are going to get fed up real quick! Otherwise, great camera, especially for handheld shots. Just my two cents.
  11. Wow, what did Guy Ritchie do to you?! :)
  12. Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels
  13. Wow, is he that hard to find?
  14. Hey, a friend of mine just bought an Arri 2C and wants to supe it up a bit. How and where do you get in touch with Axel Broda? If anyone knows, let me know. Thanks all.
  15. I normally don't post a whole lot but this subject really got me going. I can't agree more with Phil. Phil, I think you are spot on. In every way. I think it's all about interactivity. No, there will never be a "Lost in Translation", or "Remains of the Day" video game. That's absurd. What Phil is implying (and Phil chime in if I'm dead wrong here), is that as far as an entertainment venue, the fully interactive virtual reality styled action video game that places YOU in the first person lead character element, where YOU determine how the story ends, and YOU make all of the huge decisions that will ultimately lead to Earth being saved, is going to eventually eclipse the movie playing on the screen of the same storyline that is primarily dictated to you. Artists will continue to make drama/comedy/horror/etc films. That won't change at all. Just because a camera was invented didn't stop people from painting. Just because a motion picture camera was invented didn't stop people from taking stills. Just because interactive video games are now here, doesn't mean that people will stop making films. I don't believe that was ever implied. I believe what is implied is that as a commercial venue, (i.e. a way to make large scale profits off of entertainment) video games will eventually surpass movies as the primary way to make lots of money from an entertainment venue. I believe that films have been/are now/will continue to be a very important artistic medium, just as the still image, the painting, the sculpture, the poem, the song, and the story have been. I love film. I love all types of films (drama/comedy/horror/documentary/etc). I think that down the road, even after the fact, people will still be able to make a living off of making films. That won't change either. But as far as making huge/massive/large scale profits, I do believe that the fully interactive video game will one day be the top money-maker. Just my two cents. Fire at will.
  16. One not so expensive option is the Kinor Temp 1 SKL. I think it can go up to 150fps and I recently saw one on ebay for like......$3500 with lenses. Occasionally you'll see an Arri IIc Highspeed that maxes out at 80fps, but they're a little harder to come by. Another option would be one of the older Mitchell cameras, some of those models could do 120fps. Hope that helps.
  17. No, I wish I was. I get asked that all the time. Back in 2004, I took a tour of the ASC club house and Roy Wagner mentioned the same thing, being that I had the same name as Joseph Walker and was a cinematographer. Small world....common name....a sign from above that my path in life is golden???
  18. Just got another job from an old friend. He happens to have a bunch of 7289 laying around and wants to shoot an ultra stylized short film (hehehehehehe). And then it occurred to me....is Kodak going to release anything close to this stock or possibly re-release it? I know it had very limited uses but I kind of liked it. Please don't call me retarded, just curious. Thanks as always. Joe W.

    Aaton 35

Thanks guys, just out of curiosity, who can process/xfer 2 perf? Our local guys Cinefilm don't do it.

    Aaton 35

A director friend of mine is looking into possibly buying an Aaton 35-3. I believe it's a 4 perf camera and I was curious is it possible to have a 4 perf camera body converted to 3 perf. Hope its not a dumb question, but I see so much literature on various web sites specifying one or the other. Let me know if you know. Thanks. Joe W.
  21. Dude, thank you Tim. That's what I love about this forum.
  22. Hey all, I know you've probably all gotten real tired of me always bringing up CP GSMO's all the time, but I gotta ask about this one. So I'm always trolling around ebay, looking for that magically sweet deal, always praying for that day when I'll see the GSMO that's got everything....I mean EVERYTHING!!! And every three weeks, the same GSMO package continues to surface. It's always cordially wrapped under the title, "Super 16 GSMO Documentary package". It has been listed...repetitively for the past six years....for $9,999 from a seller named Pro Video Film in Dallas Texas. About three years ago, I made an offer on the camera, and was rejected. I recently re-made that offer to them. And was rejected again. Here are the facts: the camera comes with two mags, a 12.5mm CP Ultra Prime Lens, an orientable viewfinder, two batteries + charger, and NOTHING ELSE. Supposedly it is a factory Super 16 GSMO. Those are the facts. Here are my questions: 1. How on earth can this be called a "Documentary Package" when it clearly comes with the bear necessities and no zoom lens? 2. How on earth can anyone think of asking for $10K for a GSMO, and continue for six years asking for that amount for this camera? For $10K I could buy an Arri SR with a ZEISS ZOOM from Visual Products. 3. Did CP even make a factory Super 16mm GSMO? I've been told "no" by one former CP tech. 4. Has anyone ever dealt with Pro Video Film before? They're other prices seem very high. I know some of you are going to instantly reply with "Well just buy the SR from Visual products." Yes it is a better camera. But understand this is solely for me to just own and play around with. I used to own a CP GSMO many moons ago, and like a total dumb_ss, I sold it. Anyways, any help with the above questions would be appreciated. Thanks as always. Please don't get mad at me for bringing it up again. Joe Walker
  23. Wow, thanks for the advice guys, I'll definitely look into this one! :)
