  1. I need to learn how to use 16mm in a modern way, how to load, light, shoot, lenses, etc. and I live in Los Angeles. I have an Eclair NPR. Where could I go to learn all these things? I'm not looking for a "film school", just a workshop that could teach me some basics and I'd go from there. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks Sam
  2. Ian thanks for the reply. My Eclair has a setting for 24fps. I wonder if that speed is actually 23.976fps. Actually I wonder if it really matters since I'll likely use Cinelicious for transfer. Can't they adjust that speed in the process? I'm really curious about this. I'm giving up on the Canon 814XLS for now and concentrating on learning my way around the NPR since that is what my project will be shot on. Sam
  3. It's really too sad that Tobin is out of the motor business. Can someone please point me to where I could find one of his crystal speed motors for the Eclair NPR? I keep waiting for one to show up on eBay but one never does. Thanks. Sam
  4. Howdy folks, I'm completely new to filming with sound. I have a Canon 814XL for Super 8 and an Eclair NPR for 16mm which I'm thinking of sending to Bernie for Ultra 16 conversion. I'd love to know how to get sync sound if I'm using something like the H4n. I already own a Marantz PMD-660 which I bought back in 2005 I think. Back then I was getting into film but life got complicated and I never moved forward. I'm actually done moving around the globe for now and want to film with actual film again. So how would I accomplish sync sound using one of the aforementioned recorders, and either the Super 8 or 16mm cameras? Should I get rid of the Marantz and get an H4n instead? Would love some input, thanks!
  5. I'm adapting a children's story I wrote years ago into screenplay format. My girlfriend intends to use it for her animation storyboarding class final. The one thing I'm unclear about is timing. In normal live action I've always written one page to one minute of film. But in animation this seems different, there are far too many action elements that take up a lot of space on the page, but doesn't eat up that much screen time. Any thoughts?
  6. For a second I misread your name as Denise Bandeira, famous Brazilian filmmaker. ;-)
  7. Was there a response posted? I just see you quoting my post.
  8. Thanks for the info, it's my favourite show. :o) They mentioned Fringe on this thread, the last episode I saw, the one with the cel-shaded cartoonised Walter and Peter, didn't seem to have been shot on film. It looked a little different. Anyone seen that?
  9. Supernatural is shot with a Red One, I was surprised to find that out. Looks great.
  10. You haven't been to Home Depot recently, have you? ;-) Here in Los Angeles you can barely drive into the parking lot without drawing a huge crowd of latino men pointing at themselves and shouting stuff like "I am job!" I wish them the best of luck. I respect their resolve of making money here and sending it to their families. I actually think we should get rid of all the socialist-ish welfare programs and just open the borders. I wonder if any indie filmmakers have ever hired film crew off of the HD parking lot, a la Bowfinger? I seriously don't doubt some of those immigrants could do some of the simpler work. There's an idea, make a low budget film with crew completely hired off the HD parking lot, then talk about it when promoting the film ;-)
  11. Done. That rule wasn't here when I joined in 06. I guess they got tired of people naming themselves after Mexican wrestlers to complain about slot cars. ;-) Old timer joke. Ok, so how to they give that show its film look? Is grain added?
  12. I read somewhere else: "I'm pretty sure they use a Snell and Wilcox ARC150. This is a realtime box of tricks, play it in one end, play it out the other and there you go, filmised. Cheers, Andrew Parkinson (Colourist, BBC)" Any thoughts on this? Also read: "They deinterlace in hardware when they conform the project. They use a Snell & Wilcox Alchemist." and "the current BBC spec for filmic look is 1920x1080i at 25np."
  13. Indeed good news, that they're using HD now. I knew Torchwood was always shot on HD and was hoping DW would catch up. But how did they make the DigiBeta footage look like film in the past, any idea? I'm not even sure how they made the HD footage look like film, kinda new to the digital angle.
  14. Howdy folks, haven't been on these boards in a few years. I was wondering how the film look is achieved on the current run of Doctor Who. As far as I know it's shot on DigiBeta and not even HD due to the costs of rendering HD quality CGI. Yet it looks like film to me. Any idea how they do it, what software or camera settings? I'm very interested in this. Thanks for any tips.
  15. Maybe he already has the filmstock and needs to use it up. I hate Pro8mm as a company, but they do reload cartridges with any sort of Kodak film you request...at an exorbitant price.
  16. Wow, I actually did talk too much. LOL! I'm on Zoloft and Wellbutrin and if I skip a couple days I end posting like that. You know, my life story WOULD make an interesting comedy. Normally because it would make such a drama but ultimately it's a comedy because who the hell would believe it? Unfortunately it's all quite true. So to get back on topic, forgetting all that personal junk typed in the middle of the night, I see the points made around here and there is no career happening there. That's not good. I really don't know any filmmakers doing anything in the area, only John Waters occasionally and that's no help.
  17. You forgot the slot cars, and use Kodachrome 40 instead of that 200T thing.
  18. It's true, I'm just a bit depressed now. I'm not 30, I'll be 34 soon. You just have no idea how my family is. I don't understand the whole "getting a job that pays the rent" thing, I don't want to work at McDonald's. I don't really like the idea of working but if I'm going to do that....I might as well do something I enjoy. Cinematography is one of those few things. My parents have always been extremely self-centered, and liked to solve problems by throwing money at them. I've been kept in the basement since I was a child, without any real idea that I could get out. My mother always told me I'd die out there without her to take care of me. My father never did much more than complain about everything I did and tell me I was useless. I guess I am useless, but I don't really feel useless...Maybe I'm just useless to him. My cousin got thrown out of the house at age 18 and told to fend for himself. His situation was different than mine, but he ended up a coke addict till his death. This made my dad a bit afraid of throwing me out...and my mom wouldn't hear of it anyway. A while back I found out about a girl whose life story was somewhat similar to mine. The difference was that she had been raped by her father since age 8 and was unable to pick up and leave till 36. So I guess I'm lucky in comparison. The only physical abuse I encountered was getting beat up and clawed at every day by my mom, but rape would have been worse. Anyway...I doubt my parents will die any time soon, even though they are always saying they "have no reason to go on living". My grandparents said that for about 30 years before they finally did die. But if my parents did die...I suppose it would be liberating for me. Except, I would not know what to do, like pay bills and taxes. I've never filed any taxes in my life. I think learning that is easy though, I know a lot of things and I can learn more.
  19. I'm sorta curious about a career as DP. I'm going back home to DC in a few months and I really don't have anything on my resume as far as jobs are concerned. Never needed to have one, but now I do. I have a couple Eclair NPR packages which are in fine working condition. Was thinking I could probably become a freelance DP up there but I'm not too sure if the area has enough going on to keep a roof over my head. I'd rather not live out of my car. I wouldn't want to go to LA or such a place because I might end up being a drop in the ocean. So anyway, I'm pretty open to suggestions. I'd like to shoot my own movies but I don't have a steady income so that won't be happening any time soon. It's kind of an odd situation, I never had to work before in my life and I'm past 30, to put it nicely. I never been without anything that I needed, but ultimately it has finally got to the point that either I leave the house or I'll end up doing something crazy. I can't stand my parents. My father spends the entire day complaining about every single thing and my mother spends her day trying to control every single aspect of my life, and telling me she wishes she was dead because God doesn't listen to her and we "live in poverty" when we actually have quite a large house with a swimming pool. Yesterday was particularly nasty so I gotta get the hell out of here. There isn't much I know how to do that will earn me income. I mean, I do speak 6 languages and know a lot about computers and filmmaking, but those don't seem to be skills which will suffice to get me started. Sorry for the rant...I'm coming from a bit of a crazy life, here. I considered suicide but even though most people I know online are atheists, I can't seem to shake the fear of going to hell if I kill myself. :D :D LOL
  20. I know I can send it to Japan, the whole point of the thread is to find an alternative. To discover what process is used, and to try home processing of it.
  21. Well, the film in question is Fuji's current Single-8 stock. I ordered some from Kent and haven't received it yet. This was my question to him: This was his answer: The film we were talking about was this one, sold through his site: http://www.single8film.com/buyr25n.html Expiration: 2006-11 Emulsion: 739-031 So maybe he is mistaken regarding the process?
  22. Kent Bulza just informed me that Single-8 film is EM-26 processed. I would like to set up processing for it at home. What equipment would I need? Is there a list of the chemicals anywhere? Will a LOMO tank suffice or do I need something else?
