  1. I don't know how exactly it is implemented in the Sekonic's. On my Minolta meter i can set in custom menu the steps of the shutter in full, 1/2 and 1/3, while the F number remains displayed as Full F-stop + tenths of a stop ( 2.8 3/10, 4.0 5/10 etc.). There is also a custom option to display the Fstop as direct numbers: (3.1 , 4.7, etc...) but still corresponding to change in 1/10ths of stop. Are you saying if you select increments in 1/3 and shutter priority mode on your Sekonic, the Fstop number is rounded to Fstop+thirds? Best Igor
  2. Yes, when you set your FPS the shutter angle is 180degree by default. So 25fps = 1/50, 24fps = 1/48 etc... ... I think your meter is set for selecting full shutter speeds, that's why 1/50 is not available. From the manual: It is possible to switch between full, 1/2 and 1/3 shutter speeds with custom setting (see page 44). Enter custom settings mode and change shutter speed step to 1/3. 3. I've done once a simple test with 5Dmk3. I exposed a white copy paper patch to read middle gray ~128RGB, and then under and over exposed and came to these values: 2+1/3 stops over - came to around studio legal white level "235" white 2+2/3 to 3 stops over - neared the full 255 value. 3 stops under - around 30 value 4 stops under - was ~15. From that the useful information for me is that @ +2 1/3 is my diffuse white. Over it let the speculars go. For the bottom @ -3 i can see "things", @ -4 barely. Maybe total of 6-7 stops. I think that was the Standard picture profile. With the common neutral style settings for video (sharpness 0, Contrast - lowest and Saturation -2 clicks) there was some gain in over, but can't say how much. I used an ISO convenient at the light levels i tested so i can have enough room to go up and down. As i said, a simple test. A remark on the levels - all safe and sound if the full 0-255 range is used in the editing. Some software might automatically clip the levels above 235, bringing them down to be 235. Same for the bottom. 0-16 = 16. I understand your camera is 60D, but think it's dynamic range in video will fall more or less in the above limits. Test it out.
  4. How ISO is "defined" and used in the D-cinema cameras like Alexa and Red was weird for me when i first encountered it, since ISO for me meant adding gain to the sensor signal. On the above cameras the sensor is simply "fixed" sensitivity-wise and you choose how you fill it with light. The photo cameras as far as i know use analogue signal amplification when ISO is raised, regardless in JPG's or RAW, then goes through ADC. Yesterday i've red a text, must say was tired, maybe didn't got it all, saying ISO amplification in photo cameras goes to a certain extent and from then on all the higher ISO's are digitally applied - the camera processor adjusts levels like Photoshop. A term was used - entering the ISOless zone. ... I think the concept of variable over/under range varying with ISO can't be applied directly to DSLR video. There might be shift in over/under, needs to be tested, but i doubt it will be as in raise ISO 1stop = 1stop more highlights. Best. I
  5. From Canon about C300 is this graph: So from their native 850 ISO and upward the camera maintains same latitude in both directions.
  6. Yes, for you intention the reasoning is correct. That is if you want to come to your lens' f2.8. ... About the ISO's. Your working ISO's, being Out or Indoors, should be the ones you accept the picture quality off, noise wise. So your above "100 ISO to 320 for Daily outdoor scenes, and at most up to 800 ISO for indoor and night scenes" is a relative thing. You might still like the look of an 800 ISO image outdoors. Or you decide to make the indoors/night shots pristine clear so you light up the set to levels for say f4, ISO 100, 1/50. Test your camera at various ISO's, decide what is optimal for you, what will pass and what's unacceptable. Same for F-stop. While 1.4 sounds sexy and "useful" , test if it is really that practical having razor thin DoF and how is the focus following working for you. Or you like/need the sharpness when the same lens is stopped down at f4. With those parameters you'll know where you at when doing meter readings. Best Igor PS: You option for editing your post is available just a limited amount of time after adding the reply. I think, just couple of minutes.
  7. LINK __________________ LINK ________________ LINK ...... "The 30sec Storyteller" is a great book covering the process from start to finish. Just take a look at the table of contents. "Directing Actors" is a great one on the topic with so many depths and insights. "Making Movies" is the personal process of making 'em by the great Lumet. Best Igor
  8. I've seen a lot of motorized versions in various videos: Edelkrone: It's Time to Discover SliderPLUS All Over Again Konova K5 motorized slider kit Here listing on B&H of motorized sliders - LINK ... I just saw one with pure mechanical motion - "Using a clockwork combined with spring energy, Modo doesn't require any power, controllers, cables, or programming to operate, resulting in a compact and easy to use linear motion solution." Cinevate Inc Duzi Slider v3 and Modo Motion Time Lapse Kit (24") :) Best I.
  9. The idea of using mirrors or nearly-mirror-like materials to direct one light source, for the purpose of generating multiple light sources and/or reducing fall off, was utilized by DoP Christian Berger in the "Cine Reflect Lighting System". I've posted in another thread once about it, including links to videos describing the usage, the system, setups and so on, but it somehow passed unnoticed/uncommented... :) Here link to that post if anyone interested: Cine Reflect Lighting System Best Igor
  10. Not to be misunderstood, It's obvious he knows his stuff. The results speak by them self. I find his "wisdom" more conceptual and philosophical then tech-y. Here a good read, the article on "Hero" in American Cinematographer: "A Fantastic Fable" Best Igor
  11. I like most of the films he did, i like the rawness and energy in them. I even like and sometimes understand his "philosophy" and approach to filming. Exploring the space, energies and so on. Seems the intuitive and reaction to the moment and space are more important things to him to discuss then what lens/camera/filter/light he used. In the interviews I've seen and red, can't remember him going specific on gear and technique. On the other side, i find him sometimes very confusing when listening to him in interviews. His behavior, jokes and "language" (as in "pardon my language") sometimes are out of place. More or less intoxicated, the poor moderators/interviewers having hard times bringing him back on track at the event. :) I keep asking myself how is it possible for someone to work with him? :) Here is Chris together with Anthony Dod Mantle guests at .. i forgot where, talking craft, art, Q&A, and a lot of weird Doyle moments. :) HERE 'S LOOKING AT YOU,KID - Anthony Dod Mantle & Christopher Doyle Regards igor
  12. I thought the show is digital, but the pix in AC show otherwise. My assumption had nothing to do with observation, just "logic" - most shows now are digital. ... I am about to watch the 1973 film. I hope it would not be a big spoiler for the upcoming episodes.... :)
  13. I see you finished the project requiring glass shattering, however I've found something interesting on a B-Roll from "The Counselor": "The Counselor" - B-Roll - Car glass shattering - 1m25sec (The link is at the specific time) It seems there is no glass, but the move of the bat hitting it seems pretty real, like stopping/bouncing off. And then the FX guy blows off something resembling glass particles. + one more trick in the FX bag. :)
  14. "Endless Poetry" (2016) I couldn't believe when i saw who the cinematographer for Jodorowsky's new film was. :) What a combo. Here a short sweet clip of them both: I enjoyed "The Dance of Reality" (2013), the previous film very much. The 1st autobiographical from the announced 5. The journey continues with this one. Anxious to see it. Could not find any trailer just a clip online: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nCb5tc7AztQ Too bad, nothing available from those massive skeleton dance scenes...
  15. @Satsuki I tried a 508 couple of years ago in a used camera shop in Budapest. I was surprised of the build quality, robustness and all. And AA battery. After trying to "turn on" the readings in the spotmeter viewfinder i remembered - it didn't have any! What a shame... It was a good meter... and good price. ... I have an eye on the Kenko KFM-2100 (re-branded Minolta VI) and i know of the 2200. The illuminated LCD seems tempting. What puts me slightly off is the different analogue scale. On the 2100 it is from 1, 1.4, 2, 2.8, etc On the 2200 is from 1.4, 2.8, 5.6,... and the inbetweens being -3, -2, -1, 0, +1, +2, +3 for EV difference scale. Best Igor
  16. Hitler's Rant about the Canon 5DMK4 Video Features Very good, very good... :D Have a nice day! Igor
  17. Thanks Jay. The Minolta VF seems more suitable - 8, 12,16, 18, 24, 25, 30, 32, 64 and 128fps. I know, 1/48 and 1/50 are not that much of a difference...
  18. After 1/8000th shutter are the cine values, from 8-128 fps. In a video i saw the values from 8, 12, 16, 18, 24 and there it stopped for the demonstration purpose. I wonder is there 25 fps? If not being trouble, what are the consecutive fps? Thanks Igor
  19. From Cyberlink's site about your PowerDVD16 it has Tons of those "enhancement" features like the TV's: * TrueTheater® Color * TrueTheater® Sound * TrueTheater About the last one: TrueTheater Enhancements for the Best Movie Experience * TrueTheater HD - Upscale video to HD quality and beyond * TrueTheater Motion - Up-convert frame-rate for smoother video playback * TrueTheater Lighting - Enhanced image colors and detail * TrueTheater Stretch - Intelligently expand 4:3 video to 16:9 * TrueTheater Stabilizer - Minimize video shakiness * TrueTheater Denoise - Reduce video artifacts There might be the culprit. :) --- Most players can show the video stream properties - size, fps. BSPlayer shows it in the playback control panel, VLC via the Tools/Codec Information menu. I'm sure PowerDVD can display such things also. At the end of the day, go in the VIDEO_TS folder on your DVD, copy one of the ~1GB .VOB files and import it in your NLE. If unsuported, just rename the extension from .VOB to .MPG and in your NLE see the properties of the file. Regards Igor PS: How EVERYBODY knows how to "enhance" the artistic intentions of the creators...
  20. Maybe they used dry ice. For some foreground smoke i have the impression it might be a moving layer in post. best Igor
  21. I've found a G6 50p clip on Vimeo: "Panasonic Lumix G6 sample movie: handheld pan in medium light at 1080p" I saved it via the download button and choosing Original. The file was an MTS. Opened Vegas Pro 8. Created a 1920x1080 25p project. Drag and dropped the MTS clip on the timeline. Right click on the clip - Properties...\ I changed the Playback rate from 1,000 to 0,500 (note, it is comma ( , ) not dot (.) ). Hit "OK". Clip has zigzag line marking in the timeline - indicator that playback rate change is in place. Clip length remains same but at different frame rate. You need manually to lengthen it - drag the right end of the clip till the clip end notch appears. Else it will play from clip start to mid point. Render looks slowmotioned. ... I saw you are using Sony Movie Studio, but think they probably share similarities in workflow. ... If it doesn't work, try also renaming the extension of the file from MTS to MP4. and drop that file in your software.
  22. I know it's a LOT cheaper then other online places, but that's the product. ... I've just did a comparison between your above video review and my finder in front of me. All same but difference in the make/model plate on top of it, where in the above video it has also the Kamerar logo - the circle and "K" All else the same. :) Now who's the scammer? Who's making the profit? Just type in "KAMERAR QV-1" on Ali and seek out a seller with good rating, product feedback and good price. Best. Igor PS: i was about to send you link from the seller i bought mine, but they are out of the product. Still other sellers available with similar prices.
  23. I have the Kamerar QV-1 LCD Viewfinder. I have tried in on Canon 5D mk3, 70D, Nikon D750... I like the ability to adjust it up/down/left/right. Some (slight) diopter adjustments, all in all nice device. On the Nikon D750 it didn't fit well vertically. I think i couldn't get lower so some small part on the bottom of the screen, like half letters of the shutter, aperture were cropped. Might have been the opposite, but the main view area was still visible. ... I got mine at a very good price from aliexpress.com. ~45 USD and free shipping. Any more questions about it, feel free to ask. Best Igor
  24. I thought i heard the voice of Shohreh Aghdashloo (Chrisjen Avasarala - the United Nations Assistant Undersecretary of Executive Administration in "The Expanse"). Yes she is, listed at IMDb as High Command of the Federation. ... Do i feel or wish this could be better then "The Force Awakens"? Best Igor
  25. What's the thinking behind the sensor size? Neither VistaVision nor 65mm. ... New lenses on the way optimized for this format? Another entry in Field of View calculators?
